After we checked into the Cape Anguille Lighthouse Inn, we decided to drive around the Codroy Valley making photographs. Our first stop was near a small fish plant where there were several fishing stages.

I've seen similiar orange and green boats in Frenchman's Cove, located in the Bay of Islands. They may be dories, but are bigger than the smaller yellow ones I've seen on the east coast of the island. I like the wide angle photo showing the inside of the brightly covered boat that was taken with my 17-40mm lens. I've uploaded another image of this boat to my Blog this morning.

Today's photos were taken around the buildings at the Cape Anguille Lighthouse Inn, located in the Codroy Valley. You can see the beautiful view of the ocean through one of the windows in my room. I liked the veranda with a red wooden chair and a couple of items hung out to dry. I used my 17-40 mm lens to include an open storm window and a door to our rooms in the same image.

As I said yesterday, our annual `Man`s Trip took us to the Codroy Valley where we stayed at Cape Anguille Lighthouse Inn. Today`s photos were the first I took at the cape as we were checking in around 1:00 PM. The lighthouse is close to our rooms in the lighthouse keeper`s former home. For the next few days I would like to share some of the photos I took during our stay. I`ll share many of the lighthouse from different angles and with different lighting as the sun set.

The second photo shows the house that has been converted into 4 rooms that are rented to visitors to the area. I will also share photos of the house as the lighting changed.

Thunder Falls

Thunder Falls

Every year my Dad and at least 2 other of my brothers and I go on a ``Man`s Trip``. This year we went to the Codroy Valley and the Port au Port Peninsula, a long drive from base camp in Grand Falls-Windsor.

Today, I am starting with photos of Thunder Falls, which used to be called Leeches Brook when I was a kid. We used to go swimming at the falls every summer. Getting there was a hassle - a 15 km (10 mile) bike ride over a gravel road. When we got older, we hitch-hiked and a few times we even walked it. Either way, it was a long way to go for a swim!

A trail takes you to the ``Landing`` where smaller kids and families usually swam. Next is First Falls, where not too many swam but a few brave souls used to dive from the high cliffs to the small pool below. Second Falls was the place where most teenagers and young adults went for a swim. A few people used to climb to the top and jump or dive into the deep pool below. There is a cave behind the falls (about one-third of the way up) and we used to climb the sharp rocks and dive through the waterfall.

It`s too bad someone doesn`t take the imitative to make a hiking trail to the different falls along the river. I think tourists would like to see these beautiful sights.

On my way home from Grand Falls-Windsor this morning I spotted a young caribou feeding on a bog between Glenwood and Gander. I took a few photos before it wandered off in the opposite direction.

Brown Pelican

Brown Pelican

I really enjoy watching pelicans as they glide effortlessly over the beaches in Florida. I have photographed them many times and have many images of them in flight, diving for food, resting on and taking flight from the water. During my last visit to Florida, I photographed many pelicans diving for food close to the beach. After observing them for a while I was able to predict when an individual bird was going to dive. I have to admit that they looked pretty awkward when they stopped flying and dove head first into the shallow water, I was able to capture several photos of then diving and chose the third image to show how awkward they looked in the air once they decided to `take the plunge`!

Loggerhead Shrike

In 2007, during a trip to Florida, I was lucky enough to find a nest with 4 baby loggerhead shrikes that were just about ready to leave. One of the adult birds was perched in a nearby tree keeping an eye on them. I photographed them a couple of times before they left the nest.

Wood Storks

Wood Storks

I have been updating web sites for the past few days, especially the Florida Birds Galleries. At the time most of them were created, I was uploading very small image sizes and, after viewing them on someone else`s computer, I realized that there were problems with the tables on several of the pages. Since I had to fix them anyway, I decided to increase the images size as well.

It was during a visit to Florida in 2007 that I first saw wood storks. I photographed a flock of about a dozen birds a few times during the 10 days I spent in Citrus Park, located near Bonita Springs in Southwest Florida. Wood storks are the only storks that presently breed on the United States and there is a small endangered population that breeds in Florida. Even though I have been to Florida three times since then, I haven`t seen any of these birds so I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to photograph them that year.

To The Mountain 2

Yesterday, I mentioned how dry it was along the trails in the forest behind my house. I photographed the dried mud while walking across a bog that is normally very wet. In thirty years, I have never seen it that dry.

There are other images were taken from the highest point of Inner Hawk Hills. It was so windy up there that I could hardly stay still long enough to make a photo. As you can see, from there you have a great view of Conception Bay and the area around Holyrood.

Since purchasing my NIkon P500 a little over a year ago, it has become the only camera I carry on my hikes in the forest. It is lightweight and there is no need to carry additional lenses. Since that camera also shoots HD video, I made a short video while rotating my body 360°. It is pretty good, but the wind was so loud that my voice can`t be heard on the video. I would share it, but at 120 Mb, it wouldn`t be advisable to send via email.
