Port au Port Peninsula 1

Port au Port Peninsula 1

The weather didn't cooperate for the second day of our photo trip to the west coast of the island of Newfoundland. As we drove from the Codroy Valley to the Port au Port Peninsula, the clouds got heavier and heavier and the wind picked up quite a bit. We decided to drive around the peninsula despite the weather and continued on.

As we drove through the many towns along the main road, we found that there were very few places to pull off to take photos. As well, there were a lot of fast-moving vehicles which made it difficult to pull over on the narrow roads. Often, we would see beautiful cliffs in the distance, but couldn't find any decent vantage points to make photos. Finally, the strong winds and heavy cloud cover were also against us. Despite these, we did find a few places and took advantage of them to capture the images I plan to share over the next few days.

The first stop had a couple of fishing sheds with a wooden slipway leading to the rough waters. I photographed the sheds, boat and cliffs in the distance, You can see the waves beating against the beach in these photos. This is the type of day when there is a lot of salt spray in the air, especially near the water. Each time I got back into the car, my glasses were full of spots, so I didn't leave my camera exposed to the elements for very long. Salt spray and cameras don't mix well.

Codroy Valley 11

Codroy Valley 11

I continued making photos of the sun as it sank below the horizon off Cape Anguille, including a couple with the lighthouse in the foreground. I was happy to see a ship pass by just after the sun disappeared and made a couple of it with the beautiful sky behind it.

Tomorrow I plan to share photos from the Port au Port Peninsula.

Codroy Valley 10

Codroy Valley 10

I overhead someone wish there would be no clouds for the sunset, but I was hoping for a few which would add colours and textures to the sky. Those few clouds were just enough to diffuse the bright light of the setting sun, but not enough to block the view of the huge star which gives this planet enough heat and light to sustain the wide variety of life that lives here.

Tomorrow will be the last day in the Codroy Valley Series.

Codroy Valley 9

Codroy Valley 9

As the sun sank lower in the sky at Cape Anguille, the lighthouse and buildings took on a reddish glow emphasizing the red trim. I took another walk around the Cape and photographed the lighthouse and buildings again with the reddish light. I also made a few dramatic images of the lighthouse with the sunset in the background.

Codroy Valley 8

Codroy Valley 8

Today's photos were made around 6:00 PM as my brothers and I walked along the shoreline to a small shed in the distance. Next to the shed was a wooden structure that I had never seen before. It looked as though a piece of wood would be inserted in the square opening and when turned, the rope winds around the bottom, allowing the user to pull a small boat out of the water. We then returned to the Cape Anguille Lighthouse Inn and waited an hour or so for the sun to sink lower in the sky.
