Books 2

Books 2

Thanks for the comments on the images of Books that I shared yesterday. This morning I am sharing a few more.

If you went to school in the 50s you may remember the books I photographed in a museum in Bear River, Nova Scotia. I think I used these books when I attended school. An old Bible with cover missing that was stored in the back room of one of the churches I photographed caught my attention and I made an image of it.

A few years ago I photographed part of an Encyclopedia of Photography that I owned. I realized that electronic encyclopedias will soon replace the "books" that so many families purchased in the past.

Books

Books

I've mentioned before that there is a photo contest on Facebook that I enter from time to time. It costs nothing to join and you can enter up to 2 photos on a different theme each week. Even if you don't feel like entering, you can still enjoy the photos submitted by photographers around the world. You can also vote for the images you like.

Last week's theme was Books and I submitted the first two photos to the contest. I was happy that the first photo tied for 1st place. I chose to enter that one because it was different. Several people entered photos of kids with books and most didn't get very many votes - not because the photos weren't good, but because they weren't different. I didn't enter the third image with the book out of focus - saving that one for a "feet" theme.

Flowers

Flowers

I've been photographing a few other species of flowers in my yard. My wife purchased one foxglove plant several years ago and I took several photos of it. When I found out the flowers could poison a child, I pulled them up. They still grow here even though I pull up every one that I see. Just this week I found three plants blooming in a secluded part of my yard. I am amazed that they all came from that one plant and the seeds survived that long.
My wife purchased a "straw daisy" which is producing many blooms now.  The peony was a gift from a student at my school several years ago. Each year he (his parents) gave me a gift of a perennial which I planted in one area of my yard. When I moved, I took some of the the plants with me and they are flourishing in their new locations.

Wave Petunias 2

Wave Petunias 2

Thanks for the positive comments on yesterday's photos of wave petunias. Today I am sharing photos of more of these colourful flowers that are growing in flower boxes on our deck.

I photograph Flowers because of the seemingly endless variety that exist. I enjoy the intricate designs, shapes, textures and wide range of colours. By making photos of flowers, I can share a little beauty helping make the world a more beautiful place - at least for the thousand or so that view my photos daily.

Wave Petunias

Wave Petunias

My wife enjoys lots of colour around the yard and purchased wave petunias for flowerboxes on our deck. I plan to share photos of these prolific bloomers for the next couple of days.

I used my 70-300 mm lens to capture close views of the flowers, knowing that the background would be out of focus.  The black backgrounds were the shade of the forest in the distance.

Sunset

Sunset

A few nights ago I photographed the clouds as the sun sank below the horizon. We have had many beautiful sunsets this summer and I've watched most of them. I don't usually make photos because of the wires that are in front of the house, but the clouds were so colourful that night that I couldn't resist.

If you interested in shooting sunsets, remember that clouds reflect the beautiful oranges, reds and pinks of the sunset causing dramatic skies. I've overheard people state that it won't be a nice sunset for photos because of the clouds, but some clouds add to the beauty of sunsets as you can see in today's images.

Boats and Stages 15

Boats and Stages 15

I've been sharing images of Boats for the past 15 days and still have lots more in my files.  I still photograph boats everywhere I go and continue to build my collection.  If you are interested, I have more Boat Pics on my web site at:  http://www.lanephotography.com/boats/boatpics/boatpics_intro.htm.

Today's photos were taken in communities located on the Northwest Avalon: Bay de Verde, Old Perlican, Red Head Cove and Hopeall and show boats that are still used as well as a few that are not.  The weather here has been great (now 21 days without rain) and with the opening of the "food Fishery" (people are allowed to catch a limited amount of codfish for food for a couple of weeks) there are many boats in the bays and coves around the province. I encourage you to make photographs of boats on the water (and the shore) no matter where you live, because you would be preserving a little bit of our history and culture.

Boats and Stages 14

Boats and Stages 14

Today's photos were taken in different locations around the Avalon Peninsula including: Flatrock, Brigus, Holyrood, Conception Bay South and Dildo.

I am not sure if you are tiring of this series, but I plan to finish it tomorrow and move on to something different for a while.  I will return to another Boats series again - maybe next winter or Spring.
