Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel, Mexico

I mentioned in my last Photo of the Day that I was taking a couple of weeks off and I am just getting back from a Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas.  We spent a couple of days in Fort Lauderdale before embarking to Labadee in Haiti,  Falmouth in Jamaica and Cozumel in Mexico.
It was a relaxing trip, the weather was hot (as it always is in the Caribbean) and sunny, most of the time.  We had one day of rain while at sea, but the rain was warm and we didn’t mind walking or hot-tubbing in it.

I have just started to download the photos I took and will share them over the next little while.  Today’s images were taken as I got off the ship in Cozumel.  Three guys in Mayan traditional dress were accepting tips for photos, but I used my zoom lens to make a few close views as they posed with tourists.

Chipmunk

Chipmunk

Chipmunks tend to show up here in early spring and summer, stay around for a few days, then disappear.  They are cute little animals that were introduced to the Avalon Peninsula in the mid-60s.  I have been photographing them near my home in Holyrood since the mid-80s.  Many people are not aware that we do have chipmunks on the island of Newfoundland.

My Yard 2

My Yard 2

I thought I would share a photo of my compost this morning.  As you can see, I have 2 recycling bins as well as a huge pile of material that I turn once or twice a week.  I have a third bin closer to my house that I use for household waste.  In the spring, once the pile has thawed out, I will sift the material and distribute around the vegetable and flower gardens.  The stuff that can’t fit through the sifter, will be the start of next year’s pile.  This year I got 76 wheelbarrows of sifted compost., much more than I needed, so I added 20 wheelbarrows to a pile of sifted soil that I had left over.  I now have 50-60 wheelbarrows of soil that I can use next year.

I am also attaching photos of wildflowers that are still blooming here. I photographed dandelion, pearly everlasting, evening primrose, and St. John’s wort.  It is unusual to see these plants blooming so late.  I guess our warm weather (for this time of the year) is causing some of these plants to grow.  The lilac leaves are still as green as they were in mid-summer.

My Yard

My Yard

I took a quick walk around my yard this afternoon and made a few images of the fall colours.  The first photo shows what is left of a couple of lilies.  I liked the bright colours and shapes of the leaves.  Our burning bush is very bright as you can see in the photos.

Salmonier Nature Park

Salmonier Nature Park

We saw 3 moose at the Salmonier Nature Park when we were there a week ago.  I was hoping to see the “baby” moose I photographed there earlier this year, but I didn’t see it.  You may think that it is a shame to keep moose penned in, but the moose at the Salmonier Nature Park usually end up there because they have been injured.  Occasionally, a baby moose is brought there when its mother has been killed.  I believe that some animals have been released back into the wild when they have recovered or are able to take care of themselves.

As we walked around the beaver pond, I noticed that the water was much higher than last time I was there.  Then, a little further on, just a few feet from the boardwalk, we saw a new beaver house; at least the mud and sticks looked very recent.
