More Photos From My Yard

More Photos From My Yard

Today's photos were taken on June 23, 2017 in my back yard.  Most dandelions had gone to seed, the rhododendron and lilac were just beginning to bloom and the bees were loving the allium.

Feel free to share with family and friends.

Flowers 2

Flowers 2

I like watching the hard-working bumble bees as they fly from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen for their young. I have photographed bees often over the years and managed to capture a few good images that are in crisp focus. Since the bees don't stop very long, it is a challenge to make an image when they aren't in motion.

I think the purple flower is a form of loosestrife, but I am not certain. There is a small patch of these flowers growing in one of my gardens but I didn't plant them. This spring I didn't weed that part of the garden because I had purple coneflowers there for a couple of years and was trying to avoid picking them as weeds. As it grew, I wasn't sure what it was, and since there was no sign of the coneflowers, I left it alone. I know that purple loosestrife is considered an invasive species in some places, but I've only seen this flower once before in Newfoundland and Labrador and it was growing in a wetland near a river. Those were much taller plants than the ones growing here.

My wife purchased a "straw daisy" which has been blooming for a few weeks. I like the colourful blooms and have made a few photos since the plant started producing them.

Flowers

My Opening Photos Series was both interesting and productive for me. It gave me an opportunity to go through some older photos in my collection and in the process, I updated all three Opening Photos Galleries. The photos are now larger, the pages redesigned, and the links fixed or updated. Until I started the series, I didn't realize how many broken links there were. I assume it happened after a couple of server crashes and I didn't pick it up. If any of you are ever on my site and notice broken links, feel free to let me know. In the meantime, if you are interested in seeing the Galleries follow this link and you will be taken to the most recent where you will find links to the other two. http://www.lanephotography.com/previous/previous_03.htm

For the next couple of days I plan to share a few photos I've been taking around my yard in the past week or two. We are enjoying the beautiful weather this summer - the best weather we have had for several years.

The first photo shows a wave petunia, very colourful and prolific bloomers. I was following a bee that visited the lavender flowers in one of my gardens. You will have to be fast to capture bees in flight. Only one day lily plant grew this year and it produced two beautiful yellow blooms.

Wave Petunias 2

Wave Petunias 2

Thanks for the positive comments on yesterday's photos of wave petunias. Today I am sharing photos of more of these colourful flowers that are growing in flower boxes on our deck.

I photograph Flowers because of the seemingly endless variety that exist. I enjoy the intricate designs, shapes, textures and wide range of colours. By making photos of flowers, I can share a little beauty helping make the world a more beautiful place - at least for the thousand or so that view my photos daily.

Wave Petunias

Wave Petunias

My wife enjoys lots of colour around the yard and purchased wave petunias for flowerboxes on our deck. I plan to share photos of these prolific bloomers for the next couple of days.

I used my 70-300 mm lens to capture close views of the flowers, knowing that the background would be out of focus.  The black backgrounds were the shade of the forest in the distance.
