Power of 6 Project
I came across these photos of a project run by the Power of 6, a student-run business that started when the 6 students were in Grade 4 and they approached me excitedly, stating they were raising money for the library and listed the "odd-jobs" they were doing such as cleaning out desks and lockers, tutoring kids who needed help with homework, etc. I thought it showed initiative and encouraged them. I spoke with the administration and their teacher and we made a project where I would meet with them and they would learn a little about how a business works. It was such a success and those kids were amazing.
These photos show their last project in Grade 5. They wrote the ads and advertised on the school's PA system and held a very successful Rummage Sale where they raised over $1200 in 1 day. They worked so hard every day: checking each item, sorting and classifying, deciding on a price and labelling, and then storing in my cramped office. The amount of stuff that was donated was phenomenal and they had to "hire" workers to help out.
By the end of Grade 5, they had raised over $5400 and they had put a lot of work into their business. After the earthquake in Haiti, they decided that they would donate the money they had raised to help the people there. The school brought their amount to an even $6000, which was matched by the Canadian Government at the time. Their work and effort over 2 years certainly helped the people in Haiti!! I am still very proud of them!
I am putting today's photos in a Facebook album and will add more as I come across them - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/edit/a.10162214139990329
