Today I am sharing the last of this Clotheslines Series.  I could go on for another 10, probably more, days but I will continue sometime in the new year.  Today's photos were all taken on a very dull day in Belloram on the South Coast.

Bruce, your clotheslines are quite interesting. Newfoundland Women are keeping up the old tradition for sure. Clotheslines were a must when I was growing up, every family had one, and not the fancy ones either. The ones I remember were sagged in the middle so that the women could reach it, and after the clothes were pinned out, there was a clothesline stick with a notch in the top of it so that the line would fit in it and then the line was raised by putting this stick in the middle, and the other end would be in the ground. i remember making them for my mother and it had to be as high as possible to get the clothes in the wind . I smile as i see some of them on your pics. As you say "everything's a picture."

I visited several communities on the South Coast on a very dull day in August. 2008.  Despite the weather, I photographed many clotheslines in the different communities I visited. The first four photos this morning were taken in Mose Ambrose on the South Coast of the island of Newfoundland, the fifth was in Wreck Cove and sixth and seventh were in Boxey.   The eighth was in Trinity East and the last two were photographed in Chapel's Cove, Conception Bay.

This morning I am sharing a few of the comments I received during this series:

I'm sure it's not the case, but the second photo appears the wash was hung out with the owner having climbed the ladder to reach her clothesline. Kinda funny looking. Clothes always smell so fresh and have that clean look when hung out to dry. I still hang clothes out occasionally but also love my dryer, too. 

I love your clotheslines!! 

Remind me of growing up in Chicago ... my mom always liked the fresh smell that clothes took on when on the clothes line. She had a drier, but preferred the outdoor method. 

I love clotheslines!!...these are super ones, especially blowing out in the ocean breeze...perfect! 

Love the clothes line series, not too often we see clothes on the line these days 

I can smell the fresh air on those sheets, Bruce! Nothing like it! 

I've been enjoying the clothesline series. Had to chuckle today though when I saw the cod hanging! :) 

The first clothesline looks like the one I have in Florida and here. I use my lines all the time. Enjoying this series.

I have decided to stop this series after the 10th day - that would be 100 photos of clotheslines around Newfoundland and Labrador.  Since it is a theme I have been shooting for years, I still have many more images and will share more in 2014. On the last day I will also share a few comments I've received.

Even though the lighting wasn't very good, I had to stop to make a photograph of the flag mounted on a clothesline pole in Witless Bay.  At the time I thought it was is the Republic of Newfoundland flag which is green, white and pink.  However, in this photo it looks like the Italian flag.

The first five photos were taken in Petty Harbour, the sixth photo was taken in Conception Bay South, and the seventh, which was scanned from a slide, was taken in Chapel's Cove.  I was driving through Broad Cove during a sunset and stopped to photograph a clothesline with the sun reflecting off the ocean in the background.  I have always liked this photo which was taken using Kodachrome slide film. The ninth photo was taken in Brigus and the last in Salvage.

You will have noticed that clothes on most clotheslines was well organized.  Of course, it was probably hung in the order it was washed - hence all the whites and colours were hung together.  I zoomed in on the white facecloths (or handkerchiefs) to show that items of the same size were usually hung together.

The first clothesline this morning was photographed on the Great Northern Peninsula.  I liked the contrast of the colourful clothes and the treeless landscape in the background.  The second image shows a clothesline in the early morning in Red Bay, Labrador. Later that day, there was quite a breeze coming off the ocean in St. Lewis in Labrador.  I don't think it took too long to dry the clothes with that breeze.

The next three clotheslines were photographed on a beautiful day in Twillingate, Notre Dame Bay. When I saw a clothesline with the houses of Rocky Harbour in the background I stopped my car and made a couple of photos while looking across a field of dead grasses.    The sunbather added to the photo of a clothesline in Colliers and I was walking along the road in Petty Harbour when I photographed the line of colourful clothes in the last photo.

Today's photos were taken in Foxtrap in Conception Bay South and Brigus.


According to the comments I have received since starting this series, it is obvious that many of you are enjoying the photos of clotheslines. Thanks for sharing your positive memories of fresh smelling laundry that has been dried outside.
