Trout River

Another scenic community near the Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park is Trout River. The first photo shows fishing boats tied up at the wharf and the second is a wide view of the same scene. You can see the river with the boats and wharf in the distance. The third image shows a few houses and boats on the opposite side of the river.

Tomorrow I will share a few more photos of this community.

Woody Point

Today I chose a few more photos taken in the scenic town of Woody Point, Bonne Bay. The first photo was actually taken before you enter the town of Woody Point. I liked the small fishing sheds along the beach. I liked the the gray dorey floating alone in the ocean. The other photos were taken from the community wharf. You can see the lighthouse in the background.

Of course, when you visit Woody Point, you will travel through Gros Morne National Park, a world-class tourist destination. There are lots of photo ops in this area and I plan to share a few more of them over the next few days.

Woody Point

A few more of you have figured out the common thread from the past 3 weeks. All communities were in alphabetical order starting with A - Admiral's Cove to W- Woody Point, today's photos. I don't have photos of communities beginning with X, Y or Z. After 6.5 years of sending photos on a daily basis, from time-to-time I find it difficult to choose appropriate images that I feel will be of interest to the 750 people on my list. The alphabetical sequence of communities made it easy (and interesting) for me to choose photos my daily photos. :)

Today's photos were taken during my last trip to the Bonne Bay area in 2006. It was a beautiful, calm and sunny day in early August. A few days ago I sent photos of the Tablelands, which are close to Woody Point. If you make a trip to Bonne Bay area, make sure you stop in Woody Point to make a few photos. There is also a great place to get a meal of fish & chips!

Upper Island Cove

One other person has figured out the secret theme that I have been doing for the past 20 days. Today's photos are NOT part of the theme. If you want to try to figure it out, go to my Blog and review the past 21 days. :)

I chose 5 additional photos of Upper Island Cove again this morning. As I was going through the photos of communities over the past three weeks, I chose many more than 5, so I do have lots of photos lined up. :)

The first tow photos show steep cliffs, which I mentioned yesterday, with a large iceberg just off shore. I remember the day a friend and I went to Upper Island Cove to photograph the iceberg and spent hours there walking the trails and making photographs. The third photo was taken as I went by in a boat. The fog nearly covered the entire town. Look closely and you can see the white houses clinging to the cliffs. The fourth photo shows a small, interesting house on one of the roads in the town and the final image shows the bottom of a cliff which gives you an idea of how steep it is.

Upper Island Cove

Upper Island Cove, located in Conception Bay, is another community that is definitely worth visiting. Other than the houses, steep cliffs and fishing boats there is a trail that leads you past sheep pastures. In season, it is also a good place to view icebergs. If you decide to walk the trails along the coastline, you should be careful not to go too close to the edge of the steep cliffs.

I have been sharing photos of communities around the Island of Newfoundland over the past 20 days and the response has generally been positive. For those of you planning to travel around the island portion of our province, all communities are worth taking photos of. I suggest that you get off the main roads and explore the side roads that will take you to many interesting and scenic communities.

As well, I have been following a specific "theme" that I haven't told you about. I wanted to see if anyone noticed it on their own. Yesterday, one of you noticed it and let me know. Unless you were actually looking for it, it would be hard to notice. Feel free to look back through the last 20 posts on my Blog and it should be evident. :)

Tablelands

The Tablelands are located in Gros Morne National Park on the Great Northern Peninsula. The rocks in this area are reddish in colour and do not support much plant life. I have taken a few hikes into the Tablelands and always enjoy being there. These mountains are awesome and I would definitely recommend a visit to Gros Morne National Park.

Salmon Cove Beach

I've been to Salmon Cove Beach often and still enjoy it every time. Today I chose to share a few images from a photo trip in late July, 2001. Though there were many people on the beach that beautiful day, I thought you would enjoy the seascapes without seeing people. I'll share photos with people in the scenes at another time.

The three photos are actually different views of the same scene. I made the photos as I walked up the beach. You can see the island shown in the third photo in each of the others. I have watched others taking photos on the beach and most make images of their children and other family members. A few point their cameras towards the ocean to capture seascapes but they don't seem to take a lot. What type of photos do you take when you go to the beach? Do you make more than a few?

If you look closely at the last photo you can see a flock of birds flying around the island. You will also see a few people sitting on the rocks below. They have disturbed the terns which nest on the island.

Red Head Cove

Red Head Cove is located on the northwestern tip of the Avalon Peninsula and is a place that I have only visited once. I remember that the wharf wasn't in great shape when I was there in 2003. I wonder if there have been improvements made since then?

The rocks are red, and are a part of the Signal Hill Group of rocks. You can't see them clearly in these photos, but the rocks are very similar to those found on Signal Hill and Cape Spear.

You can see that the houses are built along a steep river valley.

Quidi Vidi Village

Quidi Vidi Village is part of St. John's and I have photographed it numerous times since moving to the east coast in 1981. While I lived in Pleasantville for 14 months (1981 - 1982), I often walked to the "Gut", as it is affectionately known, to make photographs. Today's photos were taken in 2003.

The village has changed a lot since the early 80s: more development, more houses, more traffic and less parking. Even though, it is still worth a stop to capture photos, and I still try to get there fairly often.

Petty Harbour

This morning I chose to share photos of people in Petty Harbour. The photos were taken in July, 2001 and two friendly gentlemen sitting on the side of the road allowed me to take their pictures. The man checking out the nets was also aware I was there with a camera. Neither of them have ever seen the photos.

I take lots of photos of people in my travels, but don't share a lot on my Photo of the Day. I enjoy photographing people as they go about their daily lives.
