Philipsburg 2

Philipsburg 2

As I stated yesterday, in the afternoon we were docked in St. Maarten, I walked from the cruise ship to the beach in Philipsburg, the Dutch capital of the island. I am sharing the photos in the order they were taken to give you an idea of what I look for and see as I photograph a new area.

Shops, restaurants and bars line the strip that runs along the beach. There were quite a few people on the beach and a few in the water. I didn't get a chance to swim because I was on a strict timeline and had to be back to the ship before it was ready to leave.

Philipsburg

Philipsburg

Our tour ended in Philipsburg, the Dutch capital of the island of St. Maarten. Because we had been on the go for nearly 4 hours, we decided to return to the Navigator of the Seas and freshen up a bit before exploring that city. The Windjammer, the buffet restaurant, was open and we enjoyed a leisurely lunch after which it was off to Philipsburg for a couple of hours. Today's photos were taken during my walk from the port to the beach, a 20 minute walk for me because I was taking photographs.

Before leaving the ship I photographed a couple of sailboats were making their way towards the beach. Then I walked past a few of the shops located just outside security on the dock. As I walked along the sidewalk towards the beach, I made a few photos of the volcanic cliffs across the street. In one image are were several goats feeding among the trees. While making a photo of a bridge that took me to the beach, a lady walked into the scene adding a more interest to the image.

Marigot 3

Marigot 3

Today will be the last of the photos I took in Marigot. I did take a few from the bus as we left the city but will share them at a later date.

The photos shows a wall mural that illustrates the culture of the French half of St. Maarten. I took a few more photos of the flea market as we returned to the bus and I couldn't resist making a few images of the harbour while waiting for the last of the tour group to arrive. There were quite a few pleasure craft moored just offshore and I wondered who owned them - probably not the average citizens of the city.

Marigot 2

Marigot 2

Because our time in the French capital of Marigot was limited to 45 minutes, we decided to leave the flea market and explore the nearby main street. As I stated in my introduction to this series, I am sharing the photographs in the order they were taken. However, I did take several photos from the bus as we travelled around the island, but am keeping those until later. You will understand why when I share them.

As we were leaving, the strong smell of spices caught my attention and I made a photograph of some of them. I would have liked to include more of the spices in the image but it was under a canopy and there were harsh shadows. As well, there were a few people there and it was difficult to shoot around them.

When I saw the green and yellow shop with bananas and other fruit for sale, I took the time to photograph it as well. The colourful image is one of my favourite of the day.

It was pretty early in the day and it seemed like the bars and restaurants were just opening - they weren't very busy at all. I liked the image of one person talking to the bartender with no one else around.

Marigot

Marigot

Marigot is the French Capital of St. Maarten and was the next stop of our tour of this beautiful Caribbean island. We stopped near the flea market and restaurants for 45 minutes, which wasn't a lot of time. Today's images were taken just as we got off the bus and we started to walk around.

The lady in the first photo was pointing out some souvenirs for a potential customer and didn't mind me taking a picture. I thought some of you would be interested in the Bob Marley image used on a bag of some sort. The older gentleman was selling straw hats of all shapes and sizes and asked if I would take his picture. If you would like to see more of the colourful items they sold in this flea market, check my Blog this morning.
