This is the last in my St. Maarten Series for now.  You will see from the images I am sharing today that there were more people around later in the afternoon.  Maybe people from the cruise ships who were on shore excursions were back and decided to check out the beach area in Philipsburg.

As you can see from the photos over the past five days, there were many restaurants and bars along the beach and the theme of pirates was a popular one there.  My wife and I stopped in the little green establishment in the eighth photo for a beer and free Wi-Fi.  We'd been on the ship for 10 days, and Wi-Fi is very expensive - around $0.75 a minute.  The beer on board the ship was $6.80 (including gratuities) each, so 2 beer for $3.00 sounded like a really good deal!!


I saw a young girl posing for a photographer and made an image of her on a bench .... Maybe I should have made more images of her as she struck many different poses around the bench and on the beach.

I made many photographs as I walked along the beach in Philipsburg, St. Maarten.  As I wandered farther from the water taxi docks I saw several buildings that were closed and others that were being renovated.  I guess they were closed for the off-season and weren't ready for the four cruise ships in port that day.  A few of the locals told me that it was the beginning of their tourist season so those establishments may be opened by now.  The restaurants, bars and beaches weren't as busy as the last time I visited this area in March, 2012.

In Philipsburg you will find a long beautiful beach lined with many restaurants, bars and hotels.  Water taxis take tourists from the cruise ships to the beach and with 4 cruise ships in port, they were very busy.  For your information, for a reasonable cost $7 you can use the water taxis as often as you wish.  After several hours of exploring the area, my wife and I returned to the ship.  Then after a short break, I went back into the city to make more photos.


I included the photos of the cruise ships to compare the size of two of Royal Caribbean's ships.  The Liberty of the Seas (on the left) is much larger than the Vision of the Seas (on the right). I think the Liberty can carry around 6500 passengers and crew and the Vision can carry around 3200.   If you are interested, you can find out what each ship has to offer by clicking the name of the ships above.

As we walked around Philipsburg I made photos of several displays outside the stores and restaurants/bars.  The most predominant theme there was Pirates.  Statues of Jack Sparrow, other pirates and even coconut pirates are everywhere. I spotted an old car on one of the side streets and made a few images.  Of course there are hats, shells and wooden products as well.  With thousands of people around, I assume the vendors do well throughout the tourist season - from November to April.
