The Battery 3

The Battery 3

If you are enjoying the photos from The Battery you will want to check the 19 photos I uploaded to my Blog this morning.  Interesting and colourful houses, windows, doors and a few with an iceberg in the background are among the last images made before I reached my car.

If you are visiting the St. John's area this summer, I would recommend a walk through this interesting neighbourhood!

The Battery 2

The Battery 2

Today's photos show the narrow streets and a few of the buildings I photographed as I walked back through the neighbourhood from the trail around Signal Hill.

I included the first photo to show that the trail actually crosses over the steps of the last house on the street.  I can't imagine what it like to have hundreds of people a day walking within a foot or two of my front door.  I suspect that Parks Canada my compensate the owner, but I am not certain about that.

You will see from the photos people do drive cars into the neighbourhood, however, I didn't see very many.  As I walked along, I wondered about where they put snow, especially last winter when we had so much.

The Battery

The Battery

The Battery is a small neighbourhood in the city of St. John's located along the harbour on the steep slopes of Signal Hill.  It is known for its narrow streets and colourful houses.  There isn't much parking in the area so I usually park the car and walk through the narrow streets.  I enjoy the walk and make photos along the way.

In years gone by The Battery was a fishing village within a city, however there doesn't seem to be much fishing from there.  You will notice a few fishing stages in the photos I will share over the next few days but most are not in good shape.  I believe several were badly damaged in a storm a few years ago.

Signal Hill

Signal Hill

Back in the late 60s one of our geology classes took a field trip around Signal Hill to view the sedimentary rocks, conglomerate and other geological features.  There were no wooden stairs or chains for safety purposes, just a basic trail on the sides of the cliffs.  Today, the trails are much safer and many more people use them.  I was surprised at the number of people there, especially the serious runners.

Today I am sharing photos of the steep cliffs, the Cabot Tower, the harbour, people, and a couple of pigeons I photographed along the trail.  I included a couple taken from across the harbour to show those of you who have never been there how high and steep the cliffs really are.
