Fortress of Louisbourg

I chose today's photos for two reasons.

In yesterday's Photo of the Day I showed houses in Newfoundland and Labrador that were abandoned or in need of repair. The buildings in the photos today show the recreated Fortress of Louisbourg in Nova Scotia. This is a popular tourist destination and offers excellent photo ops to capture images of what it was like nearly 300 years ago. Maybe here in Newfoundland and Labrador, we should be restoring the old buildings instead of letting them fade away. There are a few examples such as Battle Harbour, Commissariat House, Trinity, Brigus, Placentia and Newtown to name a few, but we have so much history.

In Louisbourg there are "actors" in period costume who interact with visitors and are quite knowledgeable about the history of the fortress. There is a bakery where you can purchase bread made with the same recipes and cooking method as they used nearly three centuries ago. Restaurants offer meals from that time period. And, there are thousands of artifacts ... a lot to see and too much to photograph in 2 and a half hours. Can we capitalize on all the history and stories in our culture as they seem to be doing in Nova Scotia?

The other reason is the fact that there are "hats" in each photo. I heard a marching band and saw their hats just above the fence. I took the first photo, then zoomed in quickly for a closer view. Did you notice the hats before I mentioned them?

Several people have responded positively to the web site and stories of an old house that I mentioned yesterday. If you are interested in the photos and stories feel free to visit http://www.stemnet.nf.ca/~blane/transitn.htm.
