Conception Harbour

Conception Harbour

Today's photos show images of the shipwreck on the beach in Conception Harbour.  It  has been identified as a SS Charcot, a whaling ship built in Norway in 1923.  Apparently there are two more shipwrecks under the water behind the one shown in today's photos.  There were five ships in the whaling fleet and the other two were sunk off  Bacon Cove, a little further out the bay.

Many people felt that the shipwreck was an eyesore and should be removed, but today many people come to the community just to view the wrecks, including divers who like to explore them under water.
