Battle Harbour

Battle Harbour

Today I am starting a new series in which I will share photos taken during a stay in Battle Harbour, Labrador in July, 2004.

Many of the photos have been on my Battle Harbour Galleries for years, but when I first uploaded them, monitors tended to be a lot smaller and much lower resolution so my photos were fairly small. I went through the images and saved them in a larger format. Since it's been nearly 11 years, and many of you have joined my list since then, most of you probably haven't seen the photos before.

Today's photos show the first views of Battle Harbour, which is a small island off the coast of southern Labrador, as we approached by boat in the late evening.

Shapes and Textures 6

Shapes and Textures 6

I've enjoyed the photos I have shared in this series over the past 6 days. It is interesting for me to view some of these images again.

The black steps on a large white oil tank in Long Pond caught my attention and I made several photos of the interesting shapes.  Sometimes, close views of different types of material are interesting.  Shooting through fresh ice on a small pond in the early morning light certainly made an intriguing composition.

The next photo shows a sunrise through the window of my front door on Muir Avenue in Grand Falls-Windsor. It was taken on slide film in the mid-70s. I zoomed my telephoto lens as I shot the photo of a snowmobile track late one evening. I really liked the freshly painted red barn with white trim on the door. I liked the colours and textures in the photo taken through the bottom of a drinking glass.  There are only shades of grey in the photo of the roof of a shed in Harbour Main.  This, like the last 5 photos, was also originally shot on slide film.

Imagine how digital photography has changed the world. Everyone with a smart phone carries still and video cameras with them pretty well everywhere they go. Photos, like the slides that cost me $0.50 each, are now free and people can shoot anything they want. Of course, I also shoot a lot more now, though I always shot what I wanted, even when it was costing money, just not as many.

Shapes and Textures 5

Shapes and Textures 5

This series certainly illustrates the them of my Photos of the Day - Everything's a Picture. I originally chose that theme because whenever I went anywhere with my camera, I always found something to photograph.

Shapes and Textures 4

Shapes and Textures 4

The first photo shows a rocky beach as the sun set.  I photographed the lights in the ceiling at the Arts & Culture Centre in St. John's and liked the result.  The third image is a reflection in the windows of a downtown hotel in St. John's.

I took the photo of a piece of ice that looked like a duck's head on the Exploits River near Grand Falls-Windsor. I remember it was a bitterly cold day and I had to change lenses before lying on the ice to get this angle. I then changed cameras and shot it in b & w as well. Yes, I carried 2 cameras, one loaded with colour and the other with b & w film.

The second photo was shot through a frosty windshield as the sun rose in the sky. The windshield was curved and hardly any light came through one side.

I was experimenting with different angles of light and shot a series of photos of an egg. This is the one I liked best.  I was making photos in a hotel and made a photo looking up and into a chandelier. I liked the textures in the white hair of a nutcracker during Christmas one year.
I have made many photographs of the shapes and textures created as ice forms in Holyrood Harbour.

Shapes and Textures 3

Shapes and Textures 3

A beach scene, ice forming on the top of a waterfall, sunset through the bottom of a glass, frost on a window, bricks, nails, feather, and railway tracks in a sunset all make interesting photos.
