Change Islands 4

Today's photos are a continuation of my Change Islands series. I have included two vertical (portrait) images which could be used as magazine or book covers. I usually take a combination of horizontal and vertical photos when I am on a photo shoot.

Once a friend asked me if I think about selling a photograph when I shoot a scene. To be honest, I don't! However, when I edit them after downloading, I choose images to share on my Photo of the Day. Next, I will probably create a Change Islands Gallery on my web site and upload to my Facebook page. When asked to submit photos for possible publication, these will be the photos I choose from. I don't delete the rest, unless they are out of focus, too dark or too bright.

Change Islands

Today's photos of Change Islands were taken from the bridge that crosses a narrow point in the harbour. The cafe in the first photo can be seen in each of the other photos. As you can see in the wide view, most of the fishing stages are painted red, the most common colour for stages around the province.

This morning I am sharing more photos from my trip to Change Islands last weekend. The main subject of photos are the stages lining the narrow harbour. The roads through the town are actually behind the houses and stages so the easiest way to photograph them is from the opposite sides of the harbour. It is difficult to photograph the stages without houses in the background.

Last weekend my father, brother and nephew went on our annual photo trip. This year we had planned on going to the south coast of Newfoundland, but since the weather forecast wasn't great, we decided to go to Change Islands, a place neither of us had visited before. Photos over the next few days will be from our trip. As you can see we had great weather on the island, which is a 20 minute ferry ride from Farewell, Notre Dame Bay.

Several people on this list have suggested I visit Change Islands and they were right!. If you haven't been there, I recommend you add it to your "places to visit". It is a scenic community with many well-maintained fishing stages.

Wreck Cove

Back to the South Coast again this morning. The town of Wreck Cove is another community that has fishing stages that are in excellent condition.

I will be away on a photo shoot for 4 or 5 days so you will not receive my Photo of the Day until next week. If the weather cooperates I may go back to the South Coast again.

Capelin Fishing

A few of days ago I photographed people catching capelin that were spawning on a local beach.

Capelin are tiny fish that "roll in" on beaches in late June or July to lay their eggs. These fish travel in huge schools and provide food to whales, seabirds, larger fish and people. When they roll in, people catch them with nets. They are tasty little fish that may be dried, pan-fried, deep-fried, or barbecued. Many people also use them to fertilize vegetable gardens.

Thanks for the positive comments on the vegetable photos I sent yesterday. I have tried growing vegetables for years and was never very successful. This year they are growing well so I assume the topsoil I purchased is good. Actually, I bought the best grade topsoil which had been composted with chicken manure, so that may be the secret.

I have included a view of the vegetable garden that was taken from my veranda. You can see that I still have three raised beds that are not filled. Now that I know things will grow, I plan to purchase more topsoil in the fall. You can see in the foreground that I still haven't planted a lawn. This year I planted nasturtiums, but am hoping to plan a few flower and vegetable gardens in that space instead of a lawn.

The second photo shows one of my four beds of potatoes. As you can see the plants are growing well and I hope the potatoes under the ground are also growing. :)

Last fall I transplanted several blueberry bushes to one of the beds. Most survived and you can see that they are producing fruit. Now that I know the bushes can be transplanted, I plan to get many more later this fall. If it works, I should get enough blueberries to last us a year.

Vegetables

Yesterday I photographed the vegetables I am growing in my yard. When our house built in 2007, we had to build a septic field that was approximately 65 feet in diameter. We can't plant trees and I didn't want to make a large lawn. As I raked the gravel, I decided to build a number of raised beds and plant vegetables. Last Fall I purchased a couple of loads of topsoil and filled several of the beds. This spring I planted vegetables which are doing well.

The first photo shows a close view of the bed of spinach, the third photo shows romaine lettuce. and the last is an image of flowers on one of my tomato plants.

Coomb's Cove

Coomb's Cove is another small town located on the south coast. Like other communities in the area, the majority of houses are white. You will notice that there are fishing stages along the nice beach in the harbour.

Some of you may be wondering about the overcast weather conditions in this area. Our whole trip to the south coast lasted 6.5 hours and the sun only came out during the last 40 minutes or so. We do get lots of sunny days here, but there is no guarantee that when I go on a photo trip that the weather will cooperate. On overcast days I try to include less sky. You will notice that there is more sky in the third photo and the lighting on the buildings isn't as bright.

English Harbour West Museum

I didn't have much time to spend in the museum, located in the yellow building I showed photos of in yesterday's photos, but I managed to make a few images of some of the antiques there. I shot many of the photos without a flash and with light coming through a window, which provided just enough light to create interesting textures, especially on wooden objects such as lobster pots and stairs.
