Yesterday, I snow shoed through the woods out back and saw a few places where someone had driven off the main trails across a large bog.
I took a few photos of where the snowmobile came very close to pitcher plants. The stalks you see in the photos will rot away in the spring, but they indicate that there are fragile plants growing inches beneath the snow. Once the snow gets a little deeper, the plants will have more protection.
The third image shows where a snowmobile went over a small fir tree. Fortunately, only a couple of branches were broken. There is at least two feet of snow there, but several small trees have been damaged already. We need more snow before small plants that inhabit the bogs and clearings will be safe from snowmobiles.
