Giant Squid Monument

Giant Squid Monument

Yesterday, I uploaded several photos of monuments around the island of Newfoundland and wondered if I should include images of a giant squid monument in Glover's Harbour, Notre Dame Bay.  This evening I am sharing 7 images of that monument.

If you are interested, feel free to read more information about the giant squid that washed ashore in the town in 1878 - http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/25287

Boats 8

Today I chose to share photos of boats that I photographed in Holyrood, Conception Bay. I'd like to remind you that these photos were originally taken using Kodachrome slide film, which until "going digital", I used all the time.

The first four photos show groups of boats fishing for squid in Holyrood harbour. The first image was published on a calendar in the mid 80s. The second image would make a good magazine cover because it is vertical and has lots of room for text. The third photo was taken in the local marina. I hardly recognized the location of this shot because the marina has changed a lot since the photo was taken.

Photos of the Day are for sale as stock photographs
and photographic enlargements.
They can also be purchased as slide shows
and/or wallpapers/screensavers.

Fishermen 3

I shared a colour version of the shed in the first photo on May 30 and decided to share a composite photograph that I created using the same image. The fisherman faded into the bright sky gives a "ghostlike" effect and the b & w gives the impression of the past. The fisherman was actually a cardboard enlargement of an old photograph that was on display in Battle Harbour. One could interpret the image as representing the fishery of the past.

The photographs of the young boys cutting tongues from the large cod on the wharf in Tors Cove was taken in the early 80s. You can see that the codfish were big in those days and the boys were probably going to sell the cod tongues - their first steps into the cod fishery. If they were 12 when I took the photo, they are in their forties by now. I wonder if they remember spending time on the wharf when fishermen brought their catch to shore.

I am heading to Nova Scotia for a few days and will not be sending my Photo of the Day while I am gone.

Holyrood

I don't think this was a good year for squid in Holyrood Harbour but since I was away for a couple of weeks in August, I may have missed it. Today's photos were taken on July 21, 2006.

It is interesting how things change, even in such a short period of time. The oil storage tank farm in the distance is, or is about to be, closed, and the first grey building you see has been torn down and another being built in the same place.

The second shows lots of activity on the wharf and the third shows what the activity was about - the squid were in!
