Downtown St. John's

Downtown St. John's

On May 12, 2024, I walked around several streets in downtown St. John's taking pictures of the colourful row houses. Years ago, I talked with Mr. Harry Cuff and he suggested that I photograph the downtown and I told him there were too many cars and wires. However, being a historian, he said to shoot with the cars because they will be dated years from now and the photos will be historical. As for the wires, he said that shows what it was like!  I did it a few times over the years and while walking around, what he said came to my mind whenever there were cars in the photos!

Boreal Chickadees

Boreal Chickadees

We have two types of chickadees around my home in Holyrood - black-capped chickadees and boreal chickadees. I have only seen boreal chickadees a few times in the 40 years I have been living here and I just finished uploading my photos to a Facebook Album that you can view here - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10163981240540329&type=3

These birds stopped by for a visit while I was hiking behind my house. I don't usually see them around my bird feeders but they did like the sunflower seeds that I carry in my pocket!

Bald Eagles

Bald Eagles

There are lots of bald eagles around the island of Newfoundland, but I don't see many around Holyrood even though there are supposed to be a couple of nesting pairs around the harbour. Garbage Along the Roads

Garbage Along the Roads

Last week, my son and I picked up garbage in the ditches near our two houses. When done, we had 2 garbage bags full!! It is unbelievable that people driving along the highways of our province just throw their garbage out of their cars. And, it is not kids who are doing it! Beer cans, coffee cups, pop cans, water bottles, fast food containers and bags, juice boxes, cigarette butts, plastic cutlury and MUCH more. It is sad to see so much garbage along the sides of our highways. It is not necessary!

There is a simple solution to this - LEAVE YOUR GARBAGE IN YOUR VEHICLE UNTIL YOU GET HOME!!! THEN YOU CAN MAKE A CHOICE - THROW IT IN YOUR OWN DRIVEWAY, OR BETTER YET, PUT IT IN YOUR OWN GARBAGE CONTAINER AT HOME!!!

In 2019. I took photos of the garbage in a distance of 1 km along the Salmonier Line in Holyrood. I created an album with over 300 photos that will give you an idea of what was in the ditch on each side of the road. It is sickening!

Great Blue Herons

Great Blue Herons

I have photographed Great Blue Herons in SW Florida and here on the island of Newfoundland. They are regular visitors here these days, though I haven't seen any around Holyrood yet. :) They are beautiful big birds and I enjoy watching them hunt!
