In the first photo of the the young one walking across my vegetable gardens, you can see my wife's brother-in-law looking up to see a very skinny moose headed towards him. The young moose looked directly towards me after it wandered into the woods. It was then that I saw the mother for the first time. She was keeping an eye on the young one, but when it came close she drove it again, then wandered down to the front of my son's house near the road. At that point I began shooting a few images in black and white (accidentally changed the settings on my camera). You can see how close to the road the mother moose is yet hardly anyone noticed it.

The moose stayed around for a couple of hours at least. During that time the mother would buck at and push the young one every time it came close. Then she would move away and keep an eye on it until the process started over again.

Today's photos show the young moose kneeling down while eating the fresh shoots of grass. As I said yesterday, there was no sign of the mother so I assumed she had already driven this calf away. The calf was very skinny and ignored the people around her so I suspect it was very hungry. I've uploaded pictures of the scars on her side to my Blog this morning. Someone suggested it could be coyotes, but I am not certain. It is truly awesome to be so close to one of the five moose that I have photographed in my yard this week.

Yesterday was an exciting day around here. I was outside working when my wife called to tell me there was a moose by my son's house next door. I grabbed my camera and walked slowly across the trail to find my daughter-in-law standing close to a young moose that was on its knees eating the new shoots of grass. I took 225 photos before I ran out of battery power. I'll share a few of these images over the next few days.

Here's the way my wife described it:

You'd just LOVE it in our garden today - there are 2 moose running around the garden all day!!! There's a mother moose (who's pregnant again) and her female yearling. Momma is trying to drive the young one away but she won't go. It's amazing to watch - such drama!!! The Mom chases and butts the yearling and the poor little one is screaming. Strangely, the Momma is at the same time keeping a watchful eye on her offspring. Once the young one runs far enough away, Mom circles back and sneaks a look. The pictures just won't do all the drama much justice!

The young moose is still a very big animal but it was so tame it let me get pretty close. Since I had my 70-300 mm, I had to back up in order to make images with the entire animal in the shot. It was interesting to watch it walking on its two front knees. I included part of the house to show you how close it was.

To be honest, this moose was very skinny and had two scars on its side so I thought it may be sick. At this point there was no sign of the mother.

As promised, I am sharing photos taken of a young moose on Sunday evening in bog near the front of my house. A visitor came to my house around 7:00 pm and told me that there was a moose in my yard. I grabbed my camera and walked slowly, and as quietly as possible, down the driveway until I saw the moose looking in my direction.

I may have mentioned previously that moose have poor eyesight but excellent hearing. This one looked directly at me for a moment but when I stopped, it turned its attention to the people talking near my house. I was able to take a few photos, but when I started to move again, it turned and ran in the opposite direction.

Two years ago I photographed a mother and calf for nearly a year. Since this moose is two or three years old, it is possible that this is the same young bull. Yesterday I went for a walk and saw MANY moose tracks along the trails. Some were so tiny I suspect they were made by calves born very recently. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to see a mother and baby as I wander through the forest with camera in hand!

Spring here usually means moose in my yard and though I have seen many tracks, the first time I saw any was on May 3. I looked out my living room window to see a mother and last years calf munching on the evergreen trees near my house. Since I photograph every moose I see, I ran to get my camera but when I opened the front door, both moose bolted down my driveway.

The first photo shows both moose just after they stopped running and looked back towards the house. Even though both moose were close together and the composition was awkward, I decided to make a few photos anyway. After a minute or so they relaxed and wandered into the woods. I walked towards them and saw the mother looking at me as I photographed her through the trees. Again she became nervous and wandered into the bog keeping an eye on me while looking around for her calf. Though she didn't make a sound I could hear, the calf came out of the woods and they both wandered across the bog and disappeared into the trees.

Even though I have lived here for thirty years and have seen hundreds of moose, I still get excited each time. A couple of nights ago I photographed another moose in the same area of my yard and was able to make a few images before it ran off. I will share photos of that moose tomorrow.

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse in Nova Scotia is probably one of the most photographed in Atlantic Canada. Officially known as Peggy's Point Lighthouse, it is situated on a large granite outcrop at the entrance to St. Margaret's Bay. Today's photos were taken during my first visit there in 2003. It was so foggy when we arrived that I could barely see the lighthouse, but within 30 minutes, the fog lifted and it was a beautiful sunny day.

You can see that there were many visitors to Peggy's Cove that particular day and since it was just as crowded when I photographed the lighthouse from a boat in 2009, I assume it is always like that during the summer months. The small village of Peggy's Cove has very few residents (approximately 46 in 2009 according to Wikipedia) but there is a restaurant and gift shop near the lighthouse which gets hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors each day. There is a small post office situated in the lighthouse and people line up to mail post cards with a Peggy's Cove postmark.

This will be the last in my Lighthouse series for now. I have received many positive comments on this series and may return to it from time to time.

Today is the last of the Cape Spear Lighthouse photos. They were taken early one summer morning in 2005. While there I was surprised to see a cruise ship approaching so I waited for it to be close enough to include in the background of photos of the lighthouse. Even though the three images show the same basic scene, each is different. As you can see it was a misty morning with a beautiful clear-blue sky. From my position on land, I saw humpback whales breaching very near the boat as though they were performing for those people on the ship who were up already.
