Thanks again for the comments on my lighthouse series. I have enough images of the lighthouses at Cape Spear chosen and will continue to share for a couple more days.

You may have noticed that I often look up to make images of most lighthouses and the first two this morning illustrate this technique. This lighthouse is small enough to walk around it quickly so I made several different images with different compositions. Someone commented on the perfect sky background for a few of the photos I shared on my Blog yesterday and it is also true of the first three images today. You can see a band of fog just off shore in the fourth image and the fifth, taken on a beautiful summer morning, shows a clear blue sky with strong sidelighting which created interesting lighting on the lighthouse. As I walked away from the area I photographed the grasses with the out of focus door in the background. I included this photo to illustrate that there are many opportunities for photos around any lighthouse.

Today I am sharing photos of the second lighthouse at Cape Spear which, built in the mid-fifties, may be the newest lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador. This lighthouse also stand on top of a steep cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Many of you are enjoying this series and have been sharing your memories of visits to Newfoundland and Labrador. I have been uploading many more lighthouse photos to my Blog (Photo of the Day Blog) over the past twelve days and encourage you to check those out as well. Tomorrow I will share more photos of this particular lighthouse.

You can see both lighthouses in the first two photos which gives you an idea of how close together they are. The third photo was taken on a different day as the sun rose, casting a reddish light on the lighthouse and cliff. The light was on and as it rotated I waited for it to be visible in the photo.

I used my wide angle lens to make the third image. I've mentioned previously that I like making this type of image of lighthouses because it emphasizes the sky and, in this case makes the cliff and lighthouse look small. I looked up the cliff to make the next two photos with the lighthouse and cliff against the sky with interesting clouds.

Cape Spear, a short drive from St. John's, is the most easterly point in North America is a National Historic Site and there are two lighthouses located there which are maintained by Parks Canada. This morning I am sharing photos of the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador. It was built in 1839 and today there is an interpretation centre in the building that shows how lighthouse keepers lived in the mid-nineteenth century. Today's photos were taken during different visits to Cape Spear.

The first photo was taken as the sun rose creating a reddish light on the hills and lighthouse. I was below the cliffs looking up towards the lighthouse to capture this image. The second image shows the lighthouse atop the steep cliff. You can understand why there is a fence to ensure people don't get too close to the edge. The third was taken as I walked towards the older lighthouse. I liked the lines and lighting on the fence and composed the shot so your eyes would first follow the fence then stop at the lighthouse in the background. On another trip I tried a similar composition with different lighting on the fence. The fifth image shows part of the lighthouse with the fence and you can see the top of the other lighthouse in the distance.

Someone emailed me a while ago and said that people outside the province would think that because of my photos we always had sunny days with blue skies here in Newfoundland and Labrador, but the last photo shows the lighthouse shrouded in fog. I've been at Cape Spear when one minute it was sunny and hot and the fog rolled in within minutes making it foggy and cold. The weather can literally change that fast in this part of the world.

This morning I've decided to share photos of Ferryland Lighthouse with people all around it. I first photographed this lighthouse in 1981 but have been there a few times since then and have shared several photos in the past. When I visited in 2003 there was something different set up there: Lighthouse Picnics. Two young women from Ferryland decided to set up a business near the old lighthouse and when I spoke to them, they said they were doing well. I returned again in 2006 to find that these entrepreneurs had done so well that they purchased the lighthouse and renovated the inside. You can see the numbers of people who are willing to walk 15-20 minutes to get to the lighthouse for a picnic and a great view of the Atlantic Ocean..

This lighthouse is painted red like the one in Twillingate, but this one is made of steel whereas the other is made of concrete. I've seen a recent photo online and this lighthouse has been painted a brighter red now. I am glad because the lighthouse wasn`t in great shape until then.

Earlier in this series I stated that I don't remember seeing two lighthouses that are identical and the photos I have shared so far have shown that. However, I wonder if anyone on this list has seen one the same as those I've shared. Please let me know if you have.

Long Point Lighthouse

Long Point Lighthouse is located in Crow Head, Twillingate and may be one of the most photographed lighthouses in Newfoundland and Labrador. Thousands of visitors come to the lookout near the lighthouse to see and photograph icebergs and whales, and many of those make images of the lighthouse..

The last time I visited this lighthouse in August, 2004), they were just putting the finishing touches on the paint job. In the first photo you can see four people painting near the top of the structure. The building attached to the lighthouse had the paint scraped off and I assume they were planning to paint it later.

This lighthouse is the only one I've seen that has a wooden structure built into the base of the concrete tower. If anyone knows the purpose of this, feel free to let me know.

Lobster Cove Lighthouse

Lobster Cove Lighthouse is located near Rocky Harbour in Gros Morne National Park. I have photographed this lighthouse several times and have shared seven different photos previously on August 25, 2010. Feel free to check them on my Blog. You might wonder what would be different about the photos taken during different trips to the lighthouse, but each time is different: the weather, time of year, number of people around, lighting, etc. Once a wedding party was being photographed there and, of course, I took a few photos even though I didn't know them. I'll probably share those when they are scanned.

The building attached to the lighthouse is a park interpretation exhibit these days and I did go through it many years ago. In the past I assume the lighthouse keeper and his family lived there. There are trails that will allow you to photograph the lighthouse from nearly any angle, though trees block the view from some angles. If you like visiting and photographing lighthouses and are visiting Gros Morne National Park, put this on your list of things to see.

Several people on this list have let me know that they love visiting lighthouses and will climb to the top if they are open. In recent years I haven't seen many that were open to the public. Years ago I climbed to the top of Cape Pine and Ferryland lighthouses and may have slides in my files. Maybe I'll have a few to share in the future. I still have a few more lighhouses to cover in this series: Lobster Cove, Ferryland, Twillingate and Cape Spear.

There is a small lighthouse in Woody Point overlooking Bonne Bay in Gros Morne National Park. This morning I've shared spring and summer views of the lighthouse with Gros Morne Mountain and Bonne Bay in the background. Look carefully in the bottom right of the photo under the tree. There was a guy there sketching the lighthouse in the early morning light. While this is a relatively small lighthouse, it certainly has a scenic background no matter where you decide to photograph it from.
