Blue and Green

A while back a person on this list recommended I enter a photo in a Facebook Group - Photography Contest * New and Improved * (see link below) and I have entered a few times. This week the theme is Blue and Green. When I started looking for photos that fit the theme, I thought I would find a lot, but, believe it or not, I was only able to find fifteen, and a few of them are questionable. Since only one photo can be entered, over the next three days I will share the others I chose on this theme.

The contest is open for submissions from Monday to Wednesday and for voting from Thursday to Sunday. They are strict about these rules and will deduct points from the photographer if people vote before voting opens on Thursday. The first photo is a reflection in a pond located on the Viking Trail a few miles before you enter Gros Morne National Park. I have passed this location many times and always thought it would be great to see a moose wading in the water, but I was never lucky enough to see one there.

The second photo was taken in Gros Morne not too far from Lomond campgrounds. I used this photo as the introductory photograph for Think Green, a project I started at Mary Queen of Peace five years ago.

The third and fourth images were scanned from slides, but I am not sure where the photos were taken. Chances are that these building no longer exist. The statue of the caribou is located in Bowring Park and the photo was taken in 1981. I photographed it again a few years ago and there was no green on the statue.

Southwest Arm, Nova Scotia

Believe it or not, there is a castle in a little cove in St. Margaret's Bay. There wasn't a lot of room to manoeuvre but we got in close enough to get a few nice photos of this interesting home. I was told the island was originally built on an island but a causeway now joins it to mainland Nova Scotia.

Northwest Arm, Nova Scotia

While in Nova Scotia, we spent a day on a friend's boat in St. Margaret's Bay. I was able to photograph the small town of Northwest Arm from the water as we approached it by boat. I really liked the colourful buildings and the reflections in the water. It looks as if this is a tiny fishing community: a long wharf, several fishing stages and a few small fishing boats.

Backgrounds

This is the last in my Food Backgrounds (Harvest Photos) Series taken in a farmer's market in Nova Scotia during my visit last week. All week I have been sharing images of fruits and vegetables from that photo shoot. Today I also shared images of scarecrows that were used as decorations in the market. The vegetables in the second photo today look like pumpkins, but obviously the colours are different.

In recent years I have seen an increase in Halloween decorations as well as cards, lights, books, CDs, and costumes for adults and children. I guess the next thing will be Halloween gifts!! That's all we need - another major spending season!!

More Food Backgrounds

I hope you are enjoying the series of food photos, or as one person described it - Harvest Photos - that I have been sharing over the past few days. Tomorrow will be the last photographs in this series.

I have been describing the images I've shared over the past few days as backgrounds that can be used in web sites and printed materials, however, they could also be used as food photographs as well.

As I stated earlier, these photos were taken in an outdoor farmer's market in Nova Scotia. A few years ago, I started making photos of fruit in a large grocery store and a manager approached me to see what I was up to. I was told that I would have to contact their head office to get permission to take photographs in the store. At the outdoor market, no one asked what I was doing even though there were at least three employees and quite a few customers. It was a great opportunity to make photos of food at harvest time.

Vegetable Backgrounds

This morning I am sharing "vegetable" backgrounds from images I made while in Nova Scotia last week. I photographed a few pieces of multi-coloured corn because I liked the contrast between the gaded leaves and colourful kernels. The bins of yellow and green string beans also made interesting backgrounds.

Red and Green

The red and green tomatoes side-by-side in the display bins attracted my attention and I made several images of them from a variety of angles. Then, just around the corner I saw red and green peppers and made a few images of them as well.
