Barcelona 11

Barcelona 11

The narrow streets around the Barcelona Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter were fairly busy so we decided to wander around looking for streets that were less busy.

I photographed people, manikins and signs as we walked around this interesting part of Barcelona. A few people were playing music or singing in an attempt to sell CDs or collect coins from passers-by. One young lady with a beautiful voice had a sign stating that she had been robbed and needed money desperately. I also saw a couple trying to read a map and decided to take a quick photo.

Barcelona 10

Barcelona 10

The Barcelona Cathedral is huge and has many side chapels and rooms on the floor beneath.. The first photo shows a small stained-glass window that looks down upon a meeting room of some sort. When I moved to the next window and there were people, I thought it would be good to show them so you can compare the height of the window with the person. Just as I took the photo, the lady in brown decided to move. Because it was dark in the church, the shutter speed was slow causing the person to be completely out of focus because of her movement. When I viewed the image on my computer, I decided to keep the image because it looked almost ghost-like - especially in such an old building! A colleague once joked that if she takes a photo and the subjects are out of focus, it is just a blurry picture and she deletes it. But, when I take one like that, it's creative. She is right, sometimes an image that is out of focus CAN be creative ... it depends on how you see the final image.

I really liked the statue of Christ's burial by Josep Llimona and am sharing two images of it taken from different angles on my Blog this morning.

I have also updated my Barcelona Cathedral Gallery which now has more than 60 images, at: http://www.lanephotography.com/places/Barcelona/Gotic_Quarter/Cathedral/Barcelona_Cathedral.htm

Barcelona 9

Barcelona 9

Today and tomorrow I plan to share photos of the Gothic Cathedral in Barcelona, Spain. As I said yesterday, last time we were in Barcelona, we visited the same church but they were doing renovations inside and there was quite a bit of scaffolding throughout the building. During this visit there were none and I was able to make a few images I didn't see last time.

The Barcelona Cathedral is very large and was built from the 13th to 15th centuries. I am amazed at the workmanship in the old churches in Europe. I can only imagine the number of people working for hundreds of years, without the benefit of modern technology, that it took to build these magnificent buildings. The architects, painters, sculptors, stone masons, artists and stained glass makers were very talented people, many of whom devoted their entire lives to building just one church.

The last time I was in Barcelona, I met a businessman and his wife that I knew from St. John's and thought it was amazing to meet someone in a different country so far away. As my wife and I walked through this beautiful cathedral I met a retired teacher from St. John's that I first met in Army Camp in 1965. He later stayed in the same residence at university and we've met a few times over the years. I was amazed that I recognized him in such a crowded church so far away from home. It is interesting that I've been to Barcelona twice and met people from Newfoundland that I knew fairly well.

Barcelona 8

After leaving the beautiful church, we headed across La Rambla then into the Gothic Quarter where it was our intention to wander around the interesting narrow streets. The images I am sharing this morning show people walking along the narrow roads. We expected less people in Europe in mid-September, but I think there were as many people on the streets of Barcelona as the last time we were there (mid-June).

We walked until coming to the Barcelona Cathedral, which we also visited last year. We decided to walk through it again because there was a lot of scaffolding inside the building last time which made it difficult to appreciate the size of this old building. I found it interesting how people avoided eye contact with the line of beggars near the entrance. The person in the wheelchair has no legs and I can understand why he may need to ask others for money. The others looked healthy enough - just older ladies dressed similarly with hands outstretched towards the tourists.

After leaving the market, we walked along La Rambla for a couple of minutes before seeing a church that I had photographed the last time we visited Barcelona. I decided to make a few photos of the beautiful building again. I looked for images that I may have missed last time and shot a few photos of some subjects again. I've chosen 17 photos to share with you today.

If you would like to see the photos I took last time, feel free to check them on my web site at: http://www.lanephotography.com/places/Barcelona/Eglesia_de_Belem/Esglesia_de_Belem.htm
