Florida Sunrise

Florida Sunrise

I could easily have called this morning's Photos of the Day "Tropical Sunrise". The photos were taken in Citrus Park, Bonita Springs, Florida. It must be amazing to live in a place where it is sunny every day. However, it is getting very hot there this time of the year.

Feel free to share today's photos with family and friends.

Double-Crested Cormorant

Double-Crested Cormorant

The double-crested cormorant is common pretty well everywhere I have travelled. They are obviously a very successful species.

Northern Mockingbird

Northern Mockingbird

These northern mockingbirds were photographed in Southwest Florida. I was surprised to see how far north these birds can be found year-round.

Blue-Flag Iris

Blue-Flag Iris

I was interested to learn that the blue-flag iris, shown blooming in Southwest Florida in April also grows in Newfoundland. It will be a while before any bloom here, usually around the first week of July.

Red-Bellied Woodpecker

Red-Bellied Woodpecker

Woodpeckers are usually hard to photograph because they are skittish and tend to hang out in the forest where they are hard to spot among the trees. I have had some success near my home in Holyrood and in a few cases where they were visiting bird feeders.

This red-bellied woodpecker was photographed at the Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary near Naples, Florida. I was lucky to capture a few photos as it attempted to get seeds from a feeder. I also got a few as it looked for food on a nearby tree.
