January 17

January 17

The year we rented from mid-January was actually pretty cool in the mornings.  In fact one morning, it was colder in Bonita Terra than home in Holyrood.  However, by mid-morning, it had warmed up to 20°C (70°F).

My day in Bonita Terra begins with a 1-1.5 hour walk around the park.  I usually carry my camera and am prepared to take photos of the wildlife that I might see.  Afterward, I do chores and errands.  Afternoons are usually times to drive around in my golf cart looking for photos.  Birds are common and on January 17, I photographed great egrets, ducks, osprey and cormorants.

Since all the photos for that day are included here, I haven't added a link to the album.

Feel free to share!

Double-Crested Cormorant

Double-Crested Cormorant

The double-crested cormorant is common pretty well everywhere I have travelled. They are obviously a very successful species.

Cormorant

Cormorant

I photographed this cormorant in Florida as it was trying to eat a fish it had just speared.  As you can see, the bird had its upper and lower beak stuck through the fish’s belly.  The top of the cormorant’s beak is curved and it was having a hard time getting it out.  Once it got its beak out of the fish, it had to line up the fish so it could be swallowed easily.  Eventually, it was successful and was rewarded with a good meal.

On October 1, 2014, I posted a comment about cormorants in PEI – feel free to have a look at: http://kbrucelane.blogspot.com/search?q=cormorants

Florida Birds

Birds

This is the last in the Florida Series for now.  Since we are approaching the Christmas season, I will share winter and Christmas photos for the next while.

Today's photos show three more species of birds that I photographed during a boat ride on the Back Bay area of Bonita Springs.

Osprey are very common in Florida and every time I go there it seems that I add to my collection of osprey photos.  They are very beautiful birds and I love watching them fly and dive into the water for fish.

I see an occasional frigate bird flying overhead and I try to get decent images even though they are very high up. I have also photographed several species of ducks in Florida as well, though I am not certain of the species of ducks in today's photos.  Cormorants are also common in Florida and I have included a few images today.

Feel free to share with family and friends.

Naples Zoo 2

Naples Zoo 2

Like other places in Southwest Florida in February, there were many interesting plants and flowers.  There were also several species of birds in the park, most of them wild and free to come and go.  The barn owl was part of a show for visitors but the cormorants just dropped in to hunt for fish in the lake.
