Peace Parade, 1982

Each morning, I have been choosing random photos to share with you.  Today, I am sharing a photo taken in 1982 at the War Memorial in St. John's.  It was taken during the Ploughshares Peace Parade.  I took several photos during the parade and will create an album in which I will share them.

The father and son didn't know I was taking their photos.  The boy is probably in his mid-40s by now and the Dad is probably close to 70.  Does anyone recognize this man?

Ploughshares Peace March (1982) - 4

This is the last in the Peace March series for now. If I come across other slides, I may share them at a later date.

As I walked along with the marchers, I remember thinking that many of the onlookers were "older" and I took advantage of the situation to make candid photographs of them. At the time I was working on a slide show of seniors entitled "Now I'm 64" and thought I might be able to use the images in that show.

It is interesting that I am now 61 and am probably older than some of the "older" people I photographed at that time. When I was 33, the thought of being in my 60s never entered my mind. Even if it had, I wouldn't be able to understand it. My father-in-law died when he was 61 (I was 25 at the time) and I thought he was an "old man". Now, 60 is young to me but I am sure that people in their 20s and 30s see me as an "old man". Since I started this series several of you have asked, "Where does the time go?". All I can say is "Time flies!"

Today's photos were taken near St. John's City Hall, where the Peace March began and continued to the War Memorial on Duckworth/Water Street.

Beni Malone attended the Peace March in 1982 along with a young girl dressed as a clown. I spoke with him a few years ago and he told me that it was probably his daughter who was then training with Cirque de Soleil. Beni now owns Wunderbolt Circus and tours the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and I think his daughter may also be part of the circus. I think they also run circus camps in the St. John's area.

As I look back at these photos, taken nearly 30 years ago, they bring back memories of the event. However, most of the memories are related to the images. I guess that looking at the slides over the years brought those images to mind and kept them fresh.

I neglected to mention that the Peace March took place in downtown St. John's and judging from the clothing most people are wearing, it probably took place in the fall. rather than summer.

The first photo shows a lady looking at the protestors through the window of a city bus. I liked the expression on her face as she watched the people march by. The other images show some of the people who attended. You can see that there were people of all ages there.

Ploughshares Peace March - 1982

In the late summer or early fall of 1982 I photographed a Peace March organized by the local Ploughshares group. It was well attended and I marched along making photos of both the marchers and onlookers. Over the next few days, I will share more of the photos I took on that march.

The first photo shows a group of young people walking along with a banner that reads, "End the Arms Race". Since the photos were taken 29 years ago, I estimate that most of those people are in their forties by now. The lady in the second photo looked pretty serious and thoughtful as she walked by. I always liked the image of the man with his son sitting in the crowd. He looked so pensive as he listened to speeches about peace and getting rid of nuclear weapons.

When I made these images, I didn`t realize that 30 years later I would be sharing them with so many people. The only way to share images in those days was to be published in newspapers or magazines. Of course, since it took 2-3 weeks to get my slides back, they were old news by then and this is the first time that these images have been seen by anyone but me.
