Another community I visited during my visit to the Great Northern Peninsula in 2004 was the small fishing community of Englee. As you can see from the photos, the sky remained cloudy but we drove around the community and I made several photos from various places around the scenic harbour.

Like most communities on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula, Englee boasts excellent iceberg and whale sightings during the Spring and Summer. It is the last community on Route 433 but worth the drive, especially if the weather is good.

Goose Cove

Goose Cove

Goose Cove is a small, scenic community on the Great Northern Peninsula. I am not sure how many tourists make the short drive from St. Anthony to see this small town of around 200 people, but I would recommend taking the time to check it out.

Today's photos were taken in July, 2004 and while we were there the sun peeked through the clouds from time to time which provided interesting lighting.

St. Anthony 2

This morning I've uploaded more of the photos I took during the evening we arrived in St. Anthony, as well as a few from early the next morning which started out clear with a little fog, but quickly changed to overcast with heavy rain.

St. Anthony, located on the northern tip of the island of Newfoundland calls itself the Iceberg Capital of the World because it is probably the most accessible place to see so many large icebergs on the island. In 2010, we were there in mid-July and there was one iceberg visible.

They also say they have the world's highest moose population and we did see quite a few - 26 in 2004 and 16 in 2010. People who travel the area often say that you are guaranteed to see a moose during the drive to St. Anthony.

In recent years they have also had visits from polar bears during the Spring. I believe the Wildlife Division had to capture at least one and return it to Labrador so far this year.

St. Anthony 1

In 2004, it was very late when we arrived in St. Anthony and beginning to get dark. The only photo I took in the scenic community was of the small lighthouse. However, in 2010, though the weather was very overcast all the way up the Viking Trail, by the time we got to St. Anthony it had cleared nicely and I took time to make a few photos of the harbour.

We drove all the way to St. Anthony during mid-summer, the peak of tourist season, without reservations for a place to stay. We were extremely lucky to find a house which was available for the night. My recommendation is to make your plans before heading up the Great Northern Peninsula.

Flower's Cove

Flower's Cove

Even though it was sunny when we drove around the community of Flower's Cove, there was a hint of fog, which burned off fairly quickly. In a few of the photos I've posted this morning, you can see houses shrouded in the light mist.

I've also uploaded a few photos of boats, a subject I enjoy photographing. As you view the photos throughout the rest of this series, you will see many other boat photos.
