Veteran's Week 1

This is Veteran's Week in Canada so for the rest of this week I will share photos I have taken over the past several years at Remembrance Day Ceremonies.

Today I chose two images that I converted to Black and White. In the first one, a member of the colour party wasn't aware I was taking his picture. After converting the image to b&w I added a red flare on the poppy.

The soldier in the second photo was standing near the war memorial in Avondale, Newfoundland and Labrador. He was standing with a rifle balanced on his foot and both hands on the stock.

Soldiers performing this duty are expected to have self discipline and not move at all during the entire ceremony. While this may look like an easy job, I suspect it is very difficult, especially on a cold November day with a mixture of rain and snow falling. You can see a drop of moisture forming on his nose and, as far as I know, he didn't move to brush it off.

St. John's - The Rooms

In July, I visited The Rooms, the new museum and art gallery in St. John's, and took a few photos looking out over the harbour.

To get the first photo, I stood as close to the window as possible to avoid reflections. Afterwards, I stepped back and photographed a similar scene, this time capturing the windows and a couple of people enjoying the view.

Because the scene was bright and I exposed the photo for the outside, the framing of the windows and the people are silhouettes. If I were shooting this scene and I wanted to be able to identify the people, I would have to use a flash or the scenery in the background would be too bright.

Rose Hips and Smoke

Sunday was a beautiful day here in Newfoundland and Labrador. I was out early to capture images of the heavy frost, then later had a bonfire in my back yard. It was Guy Fawkes (Bonfire) Day.

The first photo shows the frost crystals that formed on the rose hips in my yard. I always manage to take a few photos of the bright red "berries" topped with white crystals this time of the year.

As sun filtered through the smoke from the fire in my back yard I thought it would make an interesting photograph.

Flowers in November

Yesterday, as I walked through the woods behind my house I photographed cracker-berry plants (I have been photographing them since last Spring) and found one that was still flowering this late into the year. This was the only flower I noticed during my 1 hour walk.

The second photo shows what most of the cracker-berry plants look like this time of the year. I find it unusual to still see flowers in November in this part of the world, but in other years I have seen wild roses and lupines flowering this late as well. I guess it is Nature's way of taking advantage of any good weather we may have. If we have a warm fall, the plants can continue their reproductive cycle beyond the "normal" season.

If I hadn't been looking for photographic subjects, I would have missed this completely. Taking a camera along on a walk makes me be more observant of my surroundings.

Fall Leaves

The weather was beautiful here in Newfoundland this morning and I went for a walk in the woods behind my house. Of course I took my camera and photographed the fall colours. I am sending two photos of leaves from northern wild raisin shrubs growing near my house.

I was looking up at the branches and liked the colours against the blue sky and clouds. I zoomed in for the second photo and captured sunlight filtering through the reddish-orange leaves.

Windows and Doors, Annapolis Royal

This morning I am sending three photos of doors and windows that I took as I walked the downtown streets of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. I chose these particular images because they are quite colourful.

As I was looking through my photos looking for today's Photo of the Day, I wondered why I have an interest in photographing doors and windows and whether or not I would be boring the people on this list if I send more. I don't send a lot, but do take many.

Port-Royal Windows

This morning I chose two photos of Windows at Port-Royal. I have been photographing windows and doors for years and when I was inside buildings that had replicas of 17th century windows, I photographed any that were different.
