Moths

There aren't too many insects visible around my yard this time of the year, but during the summer there were plenty. I am sending two moth photos this morning, but I have no idea which type of moths they are. Each is about 1 -1.5 inches in length.

I received an interesting comment yesterday and I thought it was appropriate to share it ...Thanks for encouraging me to see the specialness in ordinary things.

I guess that's why I send you all the Photo of the Day. It is an opportunity for me to share interesting photos no matter what they are. "EVERYTHING'S A PICTURE".

Humans tend to take much of their surroundings for granted, but the process of photography forces you to start seeing things around you. The more you see, the more you become aware and the more you become aware, the more you see. The cycle continues every time you look through the viewfinder of a camera.

Ruffed Grouse, Holyrood

On Saturday, while driving along the Witless Bay Line, I saw a grouse on the side of the road. I turned around and went back to try and get a few photos.

I got closer and closer until I could almost touch the grouse. I have never gotten that close to a grouse before so I thought there may have been something wrong with it.

Point Pleasant Park, Halifax

Thanks to all the people who identified yesterday's flower. ALL people who responded identified it as Queen Anne's Lace. I learned a lot about the plant including that it is a member of the yarrow family and that it is expensive in California because it doesn't grow there. It is the favourite flower of several people on this list.

In Point Pleasant Park, Halifax, there is a huge anchor on display. The first photo shows the walking trail with the anchor in the distance. You can see 5 people looking at it. As we moved closer, I walked around so the sun illuminated the anchor. In the distance, you can see the faint outlines of huge cranes on the waterfront. Most of you will remember a sequence of photos in the last month or so that showed the cranes.

The final photo this morning is a cannon pointing out to sea. I assume these cannons were used for protecting the entrance to the harbour in the past.

Flower, Nova Scotia

I've had these photos ready since mid-August. The photos were taken in Nova Scotia and show three stages of a flower as it opens. This reminds me plants we have here in Newfoundland and Labrador, but is much bigger.

Once again, I ask if anyone on my list is able to identify this flower for me.

Abstract Dance

In June, I photographed a dress rehearsal of a dance recital at the Arts and Culture Centre Theatre in St. John's. I took 1500 photos and was lucky to capture some good images. Low lighting and fast movement made it difficult to take photos. Most of the photos were taken without a flash. I set the ISO level on my digital camera to 1600 and shot in Program mode.

One of the pages I created was an Abstract Dance Gallery.http://lanephotography.com/dance/abstract/abstract_01.htm. I think that I could use these photos on a web page or poster designed for young people. The lighting on the stage was very low and I set the shutter speed lower to try to get some interesting effects. I am sending three images from that gallery this morning.

Stone Building, Halifax

At one entrance to Point Pleasant Park in Halifax, stands a small stone building. It looks like a chapel, but could have been a guard house or something similar. You can see that it is relatively small building and it has a stone cross near the top. However, I haven't found anything on the web that identifies this building.

It is very ornate and photogenic and I would love to be able to walk around it to photograph it more closely. The three photos attached are the only ones I took.

The Onika

The Onika, a 120 foot yacht, was a visitor at the Corner Brook Yacht Club in early August. Rumours that Jean Claude Van Dame or Sylvester Stallone were the owners spread all around the area.

I was told that it was owned by an American who was flying up in his private jet to go to Labrador in the boat. I never did see anyone other than the crew. I wonder who owns it?
