I've been walking the trails behind my house for a couple of weeks now and have carried my camera each time. I am hoping to see a moose, but is seems like they have been hanging around my house instead. I did see one grouse, but it ducked under the bushes and I couldn't see it after it went off the trail. I've heard many species of birds but haven't seen any during my recent hikes.

It has been overcast most days so I have been taking photos of the various plant life I see: mosses, lichens and anything else that attracts my attention. Some mosses are still green after the long winter, while others are red. Lichens add a variety of colours to the cliffs and boulders along the way. The fourth image shows a small organism growing among the mosses on a stump that has been rotting for many years. The only place I have ever noticed this species is on one particular stump, so it isn't very common around here. I would appreciate it if someone could identify this organism for me. The last photo shows a few pansies blooming in my yard, a subject for an upcoming Photo of the Day.

This is the last n the Houses Series for now. Many of you were happy to see that most of the houses were being repaired. This morning I have selected photos of another house that has been renovated as well as the church in Mount Carmel which has changed quite a bit.

There are new windows and siding on the house in the first two images. It looks like there is a fenced area to the left of the photo that has been added as well.

I was surprised to see that the sunroom (behind the alter) had been removed from the church. The windows have also been replaced. I suspect that with such drastic changes, the inside must look different as well.

I went to Harricott with the intention of making photos of the house in today's photos. I have photographed it several times over the years but today's photos are digitals. The first was taken in 2002, the second in 2003 and the third a week or so ago.

In 2002 I was glad to see that the house had been painted and it looked like someone had been fixing it up. When I returned in 2003, I was a little disappointed that the paint had started to peel off, and even more disappointed last week when I saw that the veranda had been removed and the door boarded up.

Most of the houses shown in this series have been partially restored with paint, new windows, new doors or even a complete makeover, but this one seems to have been abandoned. It is located on a large piece of land overlooking the ocean with few houses around; perfect for a summer home. Of course, since I know nothing of the owners or the situation, I have no idea what is happening with this property other than it is deteriorating over time.

In today's selection, there aren't a lot of differences between the physical buildings, but there is a difference in the wide angle view. In 2002 I was using my first digital camera, an Olympus C2100 UZ, which had a great 10x optical zoom but not a very wide angle. The newer shots were taken with my Canon Rebel xTi with 17-40 mm lens, which gives a much wider view.

The house in the first photo was being renovated in 2002 and now has a nice deck on the front. The second house looks much brighter because the photo was taken on a bright, sunny day. The green on the steps looks darker than it was nine years ago.

Today I am continuing the Houses in Mitchell's Brook series in which I am comparing photos of houses taken 9 years apart.

The first photo shows a house near the intersection of Mount Carmel and Mitchell's Brook. I remembered photographing this house in 2002 with many car wrecks in the yard. Those are gone now as is the small porch on the front of the house. Windows have been replaced, roof fixed and the whole place painted.

The second set shows many changes in a house near the end of the community's road. New siding, windows, roof and chimney has certainly changed this dwelling.

Last week I went to Mitchell's Brook, Mount Carmel and Haricott for a drive and possible photo ops. It was a grey day which was good for photographing houses. Today I am showing photos of the same houses taken in August 2002, and again in 2011.

The first shows a photogenic shed taken in 2002 and the second taken a week ago. You can see that nine years ago it had been freshly painted and done up. Now it is in need of another paint job and the moose antlers have been taken down. Of course, the sunny day along with greenery, flowers and moose antlers make the earlier photo more cheerful.

The house in the third photo was for sale in 2002, but today has changed a bit. The colour yellow is different and there is a new door where there was a small window. In addition, a deck has been added to the front of the house and the shed has been painted. The last two are different views taken 9 years apart.

Yesterday I mentioned that I accidentally set the shooting mode on my camera to monochrome. At first I was disappointed that I hadn't noticed it, but when I looked at the images, I realized that they also work well in B & W.

I really like the first photo which shows the young moose looking up while eating a mouthful of grass. I zoomed in to show that the moose is kneeling down while eating. The last photo shows the mother walking near the small pond in front of my house. It had just chased the young one into the woods near my house and was heading back into the woods again. I think it was keeping an eye on the young one but still intent on driving it away.
