Palm Trees

Palm Trees

A friend from Florida loves palm trees at sunrises and sunsets so when I came across palm trees this morning, I thought it would be a good subjects for my Photo of the Day.    When I am in Florida, I most always have my camera with me and early mornings and late evenings are great times to capture beautiful images.  You can probably guess that I have LOTS!

I have a couple of Palm Trees Albums on my Flowers and Plants Facebook page:
Feel free to share with family and friends.

Fishing 2

Fishing 2

The first photo this morning was taken on the Exploits River in the spring of 1980. The young boy did not know I was taking his picture as he tried his luck in the early morning light.

The two men standing in the harbour near Avondale were trying to catch sea trout.  A lone fisherman standing in the Salmonier River caught my attention and I made a couple of photos with the sun behind him.  The man standing in a boat near Salmon Cove had good balance as he cast his line into the river.  I liked the image of a man fishing in a river near Colinet on the southern Avalon.  A couple of women were trying their luck in Lawrence Pond in Upper Gullies and three fishermen were salmon fishing on the bottom of a cliff in the Exploits River near Grand Falls.

As you can see from the photos I've shared over the past few days, fishing is an activity that gets people outside and is part of a healthy lifestyle.  Even though fishing is not overly strenuous, it is still a little exercise and every bit counts.

Sunrise

Sunrise

The early morning light of the rising sun reflected off the clouds creating a variety of golds and oranges. Silhouetted by the bright light, trees and branches stood strong against the colourful sky. These were the conditions during the first visible sunrise I witnessed during this trip to Florida. Here in Holyrood I don't get to see many sunrises because I am surrounded by hills and trees and normally don't see the sun until it is higher in the sky.

On my recent photo expedition I photographed most sunrises missing only a few when it was too cloudy or foggy. The last morning of the trip I was joined by 20 people who also wanted to experience the sunrise. Several people were making images that morning even though I had been alone most other mornings. Of course, I'll share other sunrise photos during this series.

Winter Scenes

For now, I don't have any more slides scanned of the Communities along the East Coast Trail so I will move on. For a while, I will still share images I am scanning from slides and this morning I chose to share winter scenes.

I've often talked about shooting into the sun to create dramatic photographs and today's photographs are examples of this type of image. The first photo was taken on the Exploits River in the early 1970s. I liked the light reflecting off the water and ice and made the image knowing that it would be fairly dark, but emphasize the shapes and textures of the ice..

The second photo was made during a hike to "second falls" at Leeches Brook (now known as Thunder Falls) near Grand Falls-Windsor. After a pleasant snowshoe hike on a cold Winter day, I shot many images of the icy waterfalls, then walked down the river a little ways and shot this photo with the sun behind the trees. You can see that despite the cold, there is still a little water showing in the middle of the river. When I lived in Grand Falls, I visited this river often and in all seasons.

I've always liked the third photo even though it is quite dark. It was taken near the Exploits River in Grand Falls-Windsor. It was so cold that morning that frost was falling from the clear blue sky. I liked the frosty trees with the sun in the background. The other photos also show additional examples of shooting into the sun.
