Royal Terns

Royal Terns

I have photographed Royal Terns on Barefoot Beach in Bonita Springs, Florida.  It is amazing how close you can get to these birds without scaring them off.  They are beautiful birds and, if you look closely at the close views, you will notice that they all look a little different from each other.

Royal Terns

Royal Terns

While walking along Barefoot Beach in Bonita Springs, I photographed a small flock of royal terns. These are interesting birds that are quite used to people.  I was able to photograph them from a couple of feet away.

I have created Facebook and Google Albums that show more photos of royal terns.

Barefoot Beach 3

Barefoot Beach 3

I have photographed royal terns on Barefoot Beach on 2 separate occasions and was able to get very close to them.  You will notice that the black feathers on the heads are spotted on most of the birds, but a few had solid black feathers which is common in the early spring and summer.

R - Royal Tern

Last year while in Florida, I photographed a flock of Royal Terns on a beach in Bonita Springs. It was the first time in my life I had seen this specie of bird. I was surprised that they allowed me to get within 4 feet and that they stayed while I took about 40 photos. They were still there when I left.

The two photos this morning were cropped from the original files because I wanted you to see the pointed beak as well as the details in the black feathers on its head. The common terns we have in this area of the world would not allow me to get as close to their flock. I believe they are smaller as well.

Royal Tern

The beach is always a good place to capture photos of birds.

One day, I saw a flock of strange looking "seagulls" standing together facing the wind. The black feathers on their heads looked like they were being blown by the breeze. Some of the birds had solid black heads, like the one in today's photo, while others were spotted. No two were alike! I later identified these birds as Royal Terns.

Like the painted bunting photo sent yesterday, this was the first time I had photographed this species of bird.
