Salmonier Nature Park 3

Salmonier Nature Park 3

We saw two great-horned owls, but they were behind the trees so I didn't get a photo of them during this visit.  We didn't see a lynx, pine marten or groundhog, but we did see one peregrine falcon that was eating a mouse.  It was on the ground, so I was shooting down through a wire enclosure.  You can see the blood on its beak.  A bull moose was relaxing in the tall grass and I stopped for a while but didn't see another moose.

There haven't been otters in the park for a few years, so I was glad to see the enclosure was open.  The kids didn't see it, but I told them to watch the ripples.  The otter swam right over, stopped and checked us out, then disappeared under the shrubs along the shoreline.

River Otters

River Otters

I photographed a family of three river otters in Bonita Springs, Florida.  I spotted them frolicking in a canal and followed them for a while.  They were very skittish and didn't spend much time above the water.  I had to be very fast to capture an image because as soon as they saw me they went back under the water.  I would anticipate where they would surface and wait for them.  As soon as they popped their heads out of the water and saw me, they would dive again. The photos I am sharing today are the best I got in the 15 minutes I watched them before they disappeared into a culvert.

Comments are welcome!

River Otters

River Otters

I haven’t shared photos of animals for a while so I thought I;d share a few over the next few days.  They range from Northern Canada to the Southern USA. I have photographed them in Newfoundland and Florida.  I was lucky to come across a family of 4 otters and make several photos before they disappeared into a thicket of trees.

Feel free to share with family and friends.

Salmonier Nature Park Animals

Salmonier Nature Park Animals

This is the last in my Salmonier Nature Park/Animals of Newfoundland and Labrador Series. Today I am sharing photos of a groundhog and arctic fox as well as a couple of images that I missed during this series.

The groundhog (woodchuck) is native to Labrador but not on the island portion of the province. The young arctic fox was very curious about the people looking at him and didn't get the nap he was trying to have when we showed up. I found a couple of images of river otters and snowy owls that I forgot to share earlier in this series so I am including them in this post as well.

As I stated on the first day of this series, when people visit the Salmonier Nature Park, especially on the warm days of summer, they often don't see many of the animals. I started this series to show people some of the animals that were there in September, 2006. I hope you have enjoyed the photos I've shared.
