The Acropolis

The Acropolis

In the fall of 2012, my wife and I did a 10 day Greek Islands cruise out of Venice.  One of the stops was in Athens and I did a tour of the Acropolis.  As you can imagine, I was excited to see a place I have read about many times.  I was anxious to take photos as well!!

The excursion included a guide who was relating the history through headsets.  I was happy we had an hour and a half on my own.  I was disappointed with all the cranes and other construction equipment everywhere but I did my best to hide them where I could.  You can easily see the crane in the last photo, but I did a good job of "hiding" it behind the columns.

Feel free to share with family and friends.

Athens / Acropolis 5

Athens / Acropolis 5

I checked my watch to make sure I got back to the bus on time and realized I had to rush. Of course, with people coming and going, I couldn't get past the crowd so I took a few final photos as I stood in line to get through the exit. I made it back with just 2 minutes to spare.

If you look at the photos you will see that one of the pieces in a column is smaller than those above it and looks rather unstable. As I photographed the last columns I wondered how they made the ridges. Did they chisel out the large pieces of stone?

This is the last in my Athens/Acropolis Series for now.

Athens / Acropolis 4

 Athens / Acropolis 4

This morning I have uploaded more photos taken at The Acropolis in Athens which include images of the Parthenon, people, Roman ruins below the hill and some of the columns and other artifacts which are all over the site.

One photo shows a young woman making a photograph of a young man posing in front of the Parthenon. As I've pointed out previously, I often make photos of other photographers and their subjects.

Athens / Acropolis 3

Athens / Acropolis 3

As I walked around the Acropolis making photographs I tried to shoot some scenes without people in them, however, that wan nearly next to impossible because of the large numbers of people. After a while, I gave up and intentionally shot scenes with people in them.

I walked around the Parthenon and was surprised that few people were there, especially considering that there was no scaffolding and I was almost able to hide the cranes behind the huge columns.

There were many people around the Erechtheus, but I waited and waited for a chance to photograph it without anyone. When there were only 2 individuals, I made a photo. There were other groups headed toward me and I realized that was the best I would get.

I explored some of the large pieces of marble columns and photographed some of the writing that had been chiselled into them 2500 years ago. I have no idea what the writing means, but it certainly lasted a long time. I wonder how long our paper and electronic communications will last.
