Bog

Bog

This evening I chose photos taken as I walked across a bog in the forest behind my house in Holyrood.  I made images of pitcher plants that were partially under water, as well as a few plants and a green frog.

As I hike through the woods and bogs, I often stop to make images of the plants and flowers.  I also photograph any animals, though I don't often see many.

Spider Webs

 Spider Webs

The best time to photograph spider webs is in the early morning before the dew dries up.  You have to shoot with the sun behind the webs in order to really see them.  Move a one way or the other and they almost disappear.  Look closely at the photos today and you will notice that there are different types of webs, probably built by different types of spiders.  One type is similar to a 2-D net constructed between two or more objects such as the wires on a fence or two different plants.  The other is much more complex and is more like a 3-D trap constructed between several objects.  Either way, I am glad I am a human and not an unsuspecting insect.

O'Brien's Farm, 1997

O'Brien's Farm, 1997

In June 1997, I visited Aly O'Brien at his farmhouse on Oxen Pond Road in St. John's.  He was very welcoming and showed me around and pointed out his favourite flowers and plants.  He was elderly and said he couldn't work like he used to.  I took a couple of photos of his house and he posed for a couple of pictures.

Mr. O'Brien left the 150-year-old farm to the city when he passed away and it is in the process of being restored.

I am sorry I didn't shoot more photos at the time.

Anhinga with Dinner

Anhinga with Dinner

I happened upon an American Anhinga that was trying to swallow a fairly big fish in Bonita Springs, Florida.  I made several photos as it tried very hard to swallow the fish, but eventually dropped it, drove its beak through it, then dived back into the water.  I looked for it but didn't see it again.

Small Alligator with a Large Fish

Small Alligator with a Large Fish

I spotted a small alligator with a large alligator in its mouth.  As soon as I stopped, it quickly retreated to the water.  I followed it for over an hour and it appeared it was having a hard time trying to swallow the fish.  I think it bit off more than it could chew!
