Hibiscus

I chose photos of hibiscus blooms to share today since Easter and Spring flowers always seem to go together. The photos today were taken in Citrus Park. Florida during my visit there last December. They were taken in the bright morning sunshine as I walked around the park.

The hibiscus is a popular flower in this part of Florida and there are many varieties of different colours. In the early morning there are still lots of shady areas so I made sure the blooms were well lit but the backgrounds were shaded.

In honour of Good Friday I am sharing images of the Grand Falls Graveyard that were scanned from slides taken in the 70s. I liked the statue of Jesus on the cross and I photographed it several times when I lived there.

The sun rose behind the statue and I tried to capture it with the colours of the sunrise in the background. The first image shows the cross with dark clouds with bright sun shining through. I liked the golden colours on the horizon as well.

I went to the graveyard to capture the full moon directly behind Jesus' head. The trees were in the way, but I was able to zoom in to make the third image. I liked the lighting in the third image.

The fourth photo was taken on a different day when the sun was much higher in the sky. I positioned myself so the sun was behind a tree knowing the bright sun would cause most of the image to be dark. This morning I added the poem, which I had written back in the 70s, to illustrate that an image which is very dark can still be useful.

This will be the last in my Horses series for now. I will return to it as I scan more photos of Horses around Newfoundland and Labrador.

The first photo is a close-up of one eye of the pinto in Bishop's Cove that tried to put its head in my car window. I liked the peaceful scene of a horse looking out to sea in Little Heart's Ease, Trinity Bay. I saw a gentleman leading his horse to the barn in Chapel's Cove and stopped to make a photo. I am glad I did because the barns shown in the third photo no longer exist. This is a scene that may have been common around our province in the past. Unfortunately, I don't see as many horses around these days so I haven't had many recent images.

The white horse looked almost ghost-like against the green shrubbery and grasses. This is probably the same white horse from Holyrood that I shared a couple of days ago. The black horse was also photographed near Holyrood Harbour.

I have been getting more comments on the Horses series than most photos I share. It seems as though many of you have a soft place in your hearts for horses and the photos are evoking positive memories.

In August 2001, I saw a mare with a very young foal feeding in a pasture near Holyrood Harbour. I stopped to make a few images and was lucky to observe the young one feeding, The little foal wasn't very steady on its legs and didn't venture far from its mother. I've uploaded several more images from this sequence to my Blog today.

The foal started to move away from the mare in the first image but it didn't go very far. It got tired and lay down in the grass. LIke most horses, when I got close to the fence, the mare started walking towards me and the foal stuck close behind her as she approached. The third photo was taken a day or so later when it was much brighter. The foal still lay on the grass quite a bit.

I hadn't planned on doing a Horses series but since so many of you are enjoying the photos of horses, I will continue it for a few more days. Several people have shared positive memories of horses and I encourage anyone to do the same.

I photographed the two horses in the first photo near The Dungeon Provincial Park which is located on the Bonavista Peninsula. One of the horses was tied on but the other wasn't and walked directly towards me. I have uploaded another photo of these animals to my Blog today.

The two horses in the second photo were in a pasture in Marysvale, Conception Bay and didn't bother to look up when I made this image back in 2001.

The beige horse was photographed in Holyrood that same year. Later that summer, I photographed this horse with a young foal.and will share those photos with you tomorrow.

Thanks for the comments on yesterday's photos of Horses. I have a few more to share with you this morning.

Even though the weather wasn't very good, I stopped to photograph a white horse with an iceberg in the background. This photo was taken in the 80s in Holyrood and there are quite a few changes to this part of the town. There are at least 5 houses on the hill in the background that weren't there when this photo was taken.

The black and white horse was drinking water in Port Kirwin on the Irish Loop. I was surprised to see a horse drinking salt water.

The mother and foal were photographed in Brigus. These are Newfoundland ponies, our own species of horse. They are a little smaller than most horses, but very strong. In the past they were reliable work horses and used all across the island. These days, people are trying to save these animals from extinction.

A member of my Photo of the Day list requested photos of horses and since I do have many that were taken in outport communities of Newfoundland and Labrador, I thought I'd share a few today. These images illustrate the theme of my Photo of the Day - EVERYTHING'S A PICTURE. They are nothing fancy, just views of horses going about their business. Because I like photographing most animals, I took the time stop to make these photos and can now share them with you.

The first photo was taken in Bishop's Cove, Conception Bay in the summer of 2003. This type of horse was unusual when compared with most I photograph around here. As soon as I got out of the car to make a picture, it ran quickly up the steep hill. It even put its head in through the car window. It was the friendliest horse I had ever met.

The grey horse was eating on a cliff overlooking Conception Bay. I got out of the car and it looked directly at me until it finished eating the grass it had in its mouth. I liked the the lighting in this image, the colour of the horse, and the muted colours in the background,

I stopped to photograph the brown horse with blond mane in Chapel's Cove, Conception Bay This photo was taken in the mid-eighties. I thought it interesting that there was lots of grass growing in the pasture but the horse was munching on a small shrub outside the fence.

The dark brown horse was spooked a little as I approached it to make a photo. I captured it just as it jerked its head away from me. A group of horses just off the Veterans Memorial Highway caught my attention. The scene reminded me of many I had seen in western movies when I was much younger.
