Lunenburg 4

The first photo this morning shows a larger restaurant overlooking the main street and harbour. You can see lots of people eating outside as the sun started to set and I assume there are people inside the restaurant as well. As I said earlier this week, Lunenburg is a popular tourist destination.

I liked the warm light and long shadows created by the setting sun which was reflecting off the building in the second photo. I also liked the interesting doors on a two story building located not too far from the restaurant - you can see those doors in the photo below.  I used a special effect in Picasa 3 to create the interesting window image in the next photo.  The last image shows a few small boats moored just offshore.

Lunenburg 3

I've received several emails from people who informed me that Lunenburg is one of their favourite places to visit in Nova Scotia. I really enjoyed my visits there, but also like Mahone Bay and Blue Rocks, both of which are bordering the town of Lunenburg. I shared photos of Mahone Bay from August 27-August31, 2009 if you would like to check them out on my Blog - Photo of the Day Blog. I have shared photos of Blue Rocks, but it must have been before I started my Blog in 2006, because a search failed to show photos of that community. I guess that will be a future series. :)

 As I walked along the streets of Lunenbug looking for photos, I made images of many windows and doors, a few clotheslines, and even a few signs. I liked the windows in the first two images; the white with red really stood out and the plates in the windows of the Spinnaker Inn also attracted my attention. The Full sign hung on the bottom of the Maplebird House B&B spoke volumes about the vacancy rate in Lunenburg that summer - everything was Full. I believe we got the last room in town that night.

As you can see, there were lots of other photographic subjects along my walks through the streets of Lunenburg.

Lunenburg 2

Yesterday's photos of Lunenburg showed a few buildings on the main street but today's were taken during a walk down one of the side streets. I find that I see many more photos while walking than driving, which is logical since I am moving more slowly and am closer to the buildings. Usually, I park and walk around communities for that reason.

I really liked the storefront to a quilt store. It certainly caught my attention and everything seemed to work well together: the windows, plants, building and, of course the quilt in the centre. The Knor Pub had an interesting door that I just had to photograph on the way in for lunch. The yellow house with pink door and blue trim is quite colourful. As the sign indicates, it is now a gallery and gift shop.  The blue brick siding was interesting as well as the window with decorations on the sill.  Of course, I don't pass interesting flowers either.

Lunenburg

During my first visit to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia I made about 130 photos as I walked around the town. I thought the town was very photogenic and would like to share a few photos over the next few days. This town is a popular tourist destination and, during the summer months, they get hundreds of visitors every day.

What types of photos did I see in a different town in a different province? I hope you will enjoy "seeing" Lunenburg as I saw it during a short visit in July, 2003. As I chose images for this series, I realized that the photographic subjects are very similar to those in any town I photograph: houses, buildings, seascapes, boats, fishing stages, windows, doors, clotheslines, and people.

The large red building in the first two photos used to be fishing stages, but it is now a Fishermen's Museum, gift shop and restaurant. I didn't take a horse and buggy ride, but I imagine this is a relaxing way to see the town. I cropped the last photo from a much wider view. The same red buildings are in the lower right of the third image. I liked all the colourful buildings in this scenic community.

Houses 5

This is the last in the colourful house series for a while. This summer, I plan to make a few trips to nearby towns to capture more photos of houses, and to re-photograph the ones I already have. It will be interesting to photograph them again to note the differences in them over time.

The first house this morning was photographed in Northern Bay and was close to the blue house I shared yesterday. The second, very-large yellow house was located in Harbour Grace. I liked the large windows in this old home. The orange house is located in Conception Bay South. I drove by there last week and noticed that it is now painted a different colour. This one is definitely on my list to be photographed again. :) The next three houses were photographed in Broad Cove, Conception Bay, a great town to visit if you want to photograph traditional style houses. The last image today was taken in Harbour Grace. THis large home is now a bed and breakfast, I believe.

Houses 4

The first two houses shown this morning were taken in Ochre Pit Cove, Conception Bay and the third was in Northern Bay, a nearby community. The first two, which were right next door to each other, are brightly coloured and really stand out. I thought it unusual to see two such brightly coloured houses so close together. My wife and I, and another couple, rented the blue house on a Victoria Day weekend around 12 years ago and spent a couple of days in Northern Bay. It was so foggy we could barely see across the street and it was so cold we literally spent the entire time inside this old home. I have a couple of slides of the inside, but can't share them with you for a while yet.

The dark green house was in Broad Cove, Conception Bay. Occasionally, I see this colour of house, but not too often.

Houses 3

The first two photos this morning were taken in New Harbour, Trinity Bay and the third was in Old Shop, a nearby community. It is obvious that the first two, which were right next door to each other, were abandoned. I thought it unusual to see two such large houses so close together with no one living in them. I think there was someone living in the green house, even though there were no tracks in the snow. I know the yellow house in the last photo is now lived in, at least during the summer, because there were people there during my last visit to Perry's Cove, Conception Bay.

The purpose of this series of House images is to show you the styles and colours of some of the older homes I see in my travels. I do see, and photograph, newer homes that attract my attention, but I am saving those images for the future. A few people from different countries have commented on the style(s) of houses and have compared them with those in their countries. One person has even told me that he has become addicted to photographing houses because of me. :)
