Icebergs 14

Icebergs 14

Yesterday I mentioned how the blue ice visible in many icebergs forms, and it very evident in the first photo this morning. The 85 foot long boat is dwarfed by the huge iceberg which was less that 1/3 the size it was when I first photographed it weeks earlier.

I just happened to be making a photo of the iceberg when a large piece fell off making a huge splash in the water below. Just minutes before we passed by the berg in that exact spot. This shows how unpredictable and dangerous icebergs can be. People have been killed in this province because they were too close to an iceberg when it broke apart or rolled over.

If you would like to find out more information about icebergs, check a site created by one of my Grade six students back in 2003. She had permission from Dr. Stephen Bruneau, an engineer who is considered an authority on icebergs and who later wrote a book on the subject, to use his information. http://www.mqp.k12.nf.ca/html/clau/IceBerg_Info2.htm
