Bohemian Waxwing

Today I am taking a break from scanned slides to share photos of a bird I photographed on Thursday. However, I wanted to share a couple of responses sent by members of this list regarding my comments about Time in yesterday's post.

I am ninety so you at sixty-one are just a youngster to me. Perhaps you would like to use my line --- " I'm retired and I'm on a tight schedule "

I often ask myself where the time goes. I'll be 78 next week, but I certainly don't feel that old.

On Thursday we had the second snow storm of this winter and when I was cleaning up a bit of snow in my driveway I noticed a small flock of birds in the nearby trees. At first I thought they were evening grosbeaks but when I noticed a tuft of feathers on their heads I knew they were a new species for me. I couldn't get near enough to observe them more closely and didn't have my camera or binoculars with me so I had no idea what type of birds they were.

Later in the afternoon I was outside with my camera when one of them perched on a tree very close to me. Luckily I had my 70-300 mm lens attached to my camera and took a few shots before it flew away again. When I downloaded the photos I was able to identify the bird as a bohemian waxwing, a fairly rare species here in Newfoundland and Labrador. I wonder if the recent storms all across North America were a factor ....

This was the first time I had ever seen one of these colourful birds. If you have ever seen this species of bird, feel free to let me know and don't forget to tell me where you saw it..

Photos of the Day are for sale as stock photographs
and photographic enlargements.
They can also be purchased as slide shows
and/or wallpapers/screensavers.

A flock of about a dozen visited our Cotoneaster bullatus (aka Hollyberry) tree last week. Over a period of three days, the scarlet berries were devoured by the birds. I was able to identify the Waxwing as Bohemian by the yellow bar on the wing. William F. Matthews, 65 Witch Hazel Road in Portugal Cove-St. Philip's, NL A!M 3N3

Thanks for the information William.
I am still looking for a flock to drop by this area, but there aren't many berries here this time of the year.
