L'Anse aux Meadows 9
Today will be the last of the images I made inside the replica of a Viking longhouse at L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site during my visit in July. I still have a few more taken outside and will share them over the next few days.
I thought four different coloured bundles of wool hanging in a dark corner would make an interesting image. I believe they used local plants and berries to dye the wool. I liked the way the sword and scabbard were laid out on a bench. As well, another group of objects, including horns with a red shield in the background, caught my attention.
Yesterday I mentioned that I probably would have moved further south if I had been a Viking and received this comment which provided information I hadn't heard before: Re the climate conditions at the time of the Vikings. They certainly had animals that they could bring with them. It was during the medieval warming period when the Vikings actually farmed on Greenland. I expect it was named that because of the vegetation growing and the agricultural opportunities it presented. It follows that northern NL was a much warmer place at the time.
Feel free to check out the photos I took at L'Anse aux Meadows last time at: http://www.lanephotography.com/lance%20aux%20meadows/lance%20aux%20meadows%20introduction.htm
