Winter Scenes

For now, I don't have any more slides scanned of the Communities along the East Coast Trail so I will move on. For a while, I will still share images I am scanning from slides and this morning I chose to share winter scenes.

I've often talked about shooting into the sun to create dramatic photographs and today's photographs are examples of this type of image. The first photo was taken on the Exploits River in the early 1970s. I liked the light reflecting off the water and ice and made the image knowing that it would be fairly dark, but emphasize the shapes and textures of the ice..

The second photo was made during a hike to "second falls" at Leeches Brook (now known as Thunder Falls) near Grand Falls-Windsor. After a pleasant snowshoe hike on a cold Winter day, I shot many images of the icy waterfalls, then walked down the river a little ways and shot this photo with the sun behind the trees. You can see that despite the cold, there is still a little water showing in the middle of the river. When I lived in Grand Falls, I visited this river often and in all seasons.

I've always liked the third photo even though it is quite dark. It was taken near the Exploits River in Grand Falls-Windsor. It was so cold that morning that frost was falling from the clear blue sky. I liked the frosty trees with the sun in the background. The other photos also show additional examples of shooting into the sun.

Ferryland - 1981

I have visited Ferryland often since moving to the Avalon Peninsula in 1981. Today's photos were taken on a walk to the lighthouse back then. I remember that the lighthouse was in need of maintenance, but it was open and my wife, two boys and I climbed to the top and had a great view. I believe this was before archaeologists began excavating the Colony of Avalon in earnest. There were minor digs previous to the mid-80s but since then there have been extensive digging in the area.

I don't know the people in the fourth photo and, to be honest, had forgotten there were other people there that day until I scanned the slide. My photos have etched memories into my being and because I see them from time to time, they keep the memories fresh. I guess I hadn't seen this slide for quite a while. :)

The interesting thing about today's photos is that there isn't a lot of differences in today's images of the land around the Town of Ferryland. Unless man-made structures are visible, or have disappeared from the landscape, there is little change is some areas. In others, trees and plants have grown making huge differences.

Flatrock - 1982

Today I am sharing a few images of Flatrock taken in the winter of 1982. I guess people living there would notice a few differences in the town today,

Even after I moved to Holyrood, I made it a point to visit Flatrock every now and again to make photographs. It is a scenic community with interesting sedimentary rocks that give the town its name, Today's photos were taken on a very cold, clear day and there was lots of snow around. I don't remember seeing too many people outside that day!

Flatrock - 1981

Many of you are enjoying the current series showing thirty year old scenes of Communities along the East Coast Trail. For me, they are bringing back memories of my first photo shoots in these towns and letting me see what subjects caught my attention when I was 32 years old, younger than both my kids are now!

I think anyone who knows the town of Flatrock will see differences in this scenic village today when compared to this morning's photographs. The first image shows a couple of cows in a non-traditional pasture - a rocky, hilly area of the town. The trees will certainly have grown so one may never see this view again. The second is a wide view taken from the top of the hill looking out over the harbour. I believe there are more houses on the opposite side of the harbour now than in 1981. The third image shows a few small fishing boats moored in the wide harbour.

If you know someone from Flatrock, feel free to forward the photos to them.

Tors Cove - 1981

Thanks for the comments on yesterday's photos of Tors Cove. Today, I have a few of houses and buildings in Tors Cove, also taken in 1981. I remember stopping to photograph the house with a boat under construction and thinking it odd to be building such a large boat outdoors, open to the elements. A few years later I drove by and the frame of the boat had been converted to a shed. I am pretty sure I have a slide of that somewhere.

Everything including poles looked like they had been freshly painted - so bright and white! The third photo shows an old house that may have been converted to a garage. I suspect it is gone now. The church is still there, but a few years ago someone got in and set the songbooks on fire inside the building. I believe it is locked all the time now.

Tors Cove - 1981

Thanks for the comments on this series in which I am sharing photos taken in Communities along the East Coast Trail when I first moved to this area in 1981. Today's photos show interesting views of the Town of Tors Cove.

Over the years, the busy wharf shown in the first photo fell into a state of disrepair and no longer exists as shown. Large pieces are missing and the parts that still remain do not look safe.

The wharf scene also tells a little about outport culture at the time. You can see fish being thrown onto the wharf from a small boat and kids waiting to cut tongues out of the large cod, In the background fishermen are splitting the day's catch of codfish. This photo was taken a decade before the Cod Moratorium, which closed the cod fishery in this province for years. Even now there is only a very limited cod fishery here. There have been many changes in the fishery in the past 30 years!

The images of the harbour with boats and islands in the background would be much the same today except, there would prbably be fewer boats there now.

Petty Harbour -1981

Petty Harbour has changed a lot in 30 years and today's photos show some of the fishing stages that are no longer there.

A few years ago I heard that the Town of Petty Harbour were going to start a living museum that would involve rebuilding some of the stages and hiring people to show tourists how fish was brought to shore and processed in the days gone by. I thought at the time that this would be a great idea that is done in other parts of the world and is quite entertaining and informative. However, I haven't seen any signs of that project proceeding.

I believe the fishing stages in the foreground of the first photo are gone, or changed a lot. The stages in the next photo were certainly different when I photographed them in 2003. A couple of them were boarded up and others were falling into the sea making this scene looked quite different.

Feel free to check more recent photos of Petty Harbour at: http://www.lanephotography.com/petty_harbour/petty_harbour.htm
