Fishing

Members of my Photo of the Day list come from all over the world (check it out at http://lanephotography.com/locations_pd.htm ) and I often wonder if everyone enjoys my daily photos. Those of you who have been on my list for a while know that I try to send current photos but I don't want to send the same type of images every day. During the past two summers I have been sending a lot of photos of local plants and hope you are not tiring of them.

Last year I started an A-Z theme and many people seemed to enjoy that approach. As a result, starting tomorrow I will begin another alphabetical theme.

This morning's photos were taken in mid-July, 2004 near the town of Bacon Cove, Conception Bay. I took quite a few photos of the boat but when I saw the fishermen checking their nets, I stopped and took a few more.

As in many parts of the world, the fish stocks off Newfoundland and Labrador are dwindling and several species can no longer be fished commercially. Photos of fishing that I have taken over the years will be historical images in the not-too-distant future.

Mushroom

Last week I hiked to the hills behind my house and near the highest point I stopped to photograph the mushroom in the first photo. I was surprised to see one growing in the open on top of a mountain because most mushrooms I see are growing on the forest floor.

Approximately 24 hours later I was even more surprised to see that the mushroom looked totally different. I checked a few mushroom identification sites and think it may be an amanita muscaria, but am not certain.

During my many hikes through the forest, I see mushrooms of all shapes and sizes but didn't realize that those shown in the two images this morning were the same species.

Flowers

I spent a while making close-up photographs of flowers that are growing in my back yard. When I look closely at the parts of the flower I am truly amazed at their shapes and textures. The first photo is a sunflower, the second a nasturtium and the third is a squash. All three photos this morning were cropped from the original photos.

Bees

I have photographed many bees as they visit flowers collecting nectar and spreading pollen. The photos this morning were taken as a bumble bee walked around an aster in my yard. It is amazing that creatures with such large bodies in relation to the size of their wings can fly at all!

Harbour Breton

It was nearing the end of our trip to the Connaigre Peninsula when the sky began to clear and we were beginning to see a little blue in the water. (Notice that the water is partly gray and partly blue) I liked the fishing stages with the little boats lined up just off the shoreline and had to take a few photos before heading home.

Harbour Breton is the largest community in this part of the island of Newfoundland, and we didn't have time to make many images of this scenic town. I will definitely have to make another trip back there next summer!

Harbour Breton

This morning I am continuing the series of photos taken on the south coast of Newfoundland in early August.

The boats going in and out the harbour in the town of Harbour Breton were much different than the sail and pleasure boats I photographed in St. Margaret's Bay. There were several small motor boats zipping back and forth the harbour and I assumed they were involved in the "food fishery", which had recently opened.

The first two photos show some of the scenic views looking out the harbour. The second two show a boat approaching and passing nearly directly underneath as it goes under the bridge on which I was standing.

Schooner

While anchored in St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia, a two-masted schooner sailed by going against the wind. It tacked back and forth the bay as it made its way out the bay. I still find it amazing how sailboats can sail with the wind blowing towards them.

Normally I would straighten the horizon in this type of photo before sharing, but I wanted to illustrate how difficult it is to make an image with a horizontal horizon when you are on a boat. No matter how hard I try, when the boat I am on is bobbing up and down in the waves, the horizon is on an angle in most photos.
