Woody Point

Woody Point is located in Bonne Bay on the Great Northern Peninsula. It is also within the boundaries of Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I've visited this beautiful town several times over the years by car and by boat and have many more images of the area. Except for the scene with snow, today's photos were taken on a beautiful morning in August, 2005.

Too Good Arm is another of those tiny communities on New World Island in the Herring Neck area. As I pointed out a couple of days ago, I may have mixed up some of the communities there and that's why I am sharing them in sequence.

Cobb's Arm

Cobb's Arm is another of those tiny communities in the Herring Neck area. Like the others, this town has a protected harbour, fishing stages and boats; all subjects I like to photograph in rural communities around this province.

Many people around the world have been commenting on the beautiful and unique scenery in this part of the world. I have to agree that our open spaces, nearly 10 000 km (6000 mi) of coastline, variety of landscapes and abundant wildlife make it a photographer's paradise.

Salt Harbour

As promised, today I am sharing more photos of the Herring Neck area with photos of Salt Harbour. Many people visit Twillingate every year with hopes of seeing icebergs. I don't know how many people take the time to visit the small communities just off the main road, but I suspect there aren't too many.

I've been to Twillingate several times but only explored these small communities on one occasion. I am sorry for it now because when I visited this area in the 1970s there were probably many more fishing stages and different types of boats to photograph.

Herring Neck

I visited Herring Neck, located on New World Island in Notre Dame Bay, on a beautiful summer day in 2004. During a photo trip to the Twillingate area, I explored several towns on side roads off the main highway. If you're travelling in this area I would recommend a few side trips to some of the small communities there.

This community encompasses several smaller communities including Too Good Arm, Cobb's Arm, Merritt's Harbour, Salt Harbour and Ship Island. I have a few photos from some of these communities and will share them next just in case I have some of the photos identified incorrectly.

Summerville

Summerville

Summerville is located in Bonavista Bay and is a scenic community with many fishing stages. I visited this community during the same photo trip as Princeton, photos of which I shared with you yesterday, and have made a mental note to visit again during the summer.

While there, I also made several photos of boats which I plan to share in another Boats Series later on.

Princeton

Princeton

I visited Princeton, Bonavista Bay during a photo trip to the Bonavista Peninsula during which I explored several of the side roads. It was the only time I had taken the time to go off the main road before getting to the town of Trinity. It was early April and there was still a little snow around. In early Spring there isn't a lot of colour and the ground is fairly muddy but I was able to get a few photos of the communities I visited. I think a trip back there during the summer is a good idea!

This is the 40th posting in my Communities of Newfoundland Series which will continue for another couple of weeks. The majority of photos I've shared were taken before 2004 because I didn't want to duplicate many photos on my Blog and I have been sharing photos there since the summer of 2006.

Aquaforte

Aquaforte

In 2006, Aquaforte had its lowest population in over 100 years - 103. When today's photos were taken in August of 2002 the small fish plant was still open there were around 30 more people. I am not sure how many live there today.

Like many rural communities affected by the closure of the cod fishery some boats and fishing stages have been neglected and have fallen into a state of disrepair. The boat in the second last photo tells a story common in many communities - hauled up on the shore, overturned and rotting away, I've photographed this type of scene all over our province in the past 10-15 years and may be a subject for a future Photo of the Day.

Avondale

Avondale

Avondale, located in Conception Bay Centre, is a little different than many of the communities I've been sharing since January 1. In many communities around this province houses are built along the sides of the harbour but here there are very few houses near the water. If you look carefully in the last photo you will see a little blue near the bottom right of the image (just above lanephotography.com). Most houses in the town are back from the ocean.

In the past week or so since I changed servers, several emails are being bounced back stating that the account no longer exists or that my email address is being rejected. As most of you know, after I get that message three days in a row, I delete that address from my Photo of the Day list. If you know of someone who stopped receiving my daily photos tell them to contact me and I can add them again.

I've been using facebook to advise my friends and family of the community I've been sharing each day. If you are one of my friends on facebook, feel free to share with your friends. I also shared a slide show entitled Pitcher Plant which I've also uploaded to my Youtube channel. Bay de Verde

Bay de Verde

Bay de Verde is located at the north western tip of the Avalon Peninsula and is also located along the Baccalieu Trail. This small town with a population of around 500 was first settled around 1660 and its inhabitants have relied on the fishing industry to eke a living from the sea.

As you can see from the photos the town is built on two steep hills and valley between them. When the photos were taken in 2003 the fish plant was operational and many people in the town were employed there. I am not sure if that was one of the plants that closed recently or not.

As I said yesterday, my web site and email are working, but there is a limit of 200 emails per hour. As a result, most of my Photos of the Day emails were returned to me yesterday. I had to resend many of them again using another account. I apologize if any of you received the photos twice. In the future I will be sending my photos through this account (blane@nf.sympatico.ca) so you may have to "allow" emals from that address. Bishop's Cove

Bishop's Cove

Bishop's Cove is another small community along the Baccalieu Trail in Conception Bay. As you can see from the photos, the houses are built along the ocean. If you drive through the community without getting out to explore, you will miss many good photo ops. To make the second photo I walked down to the shoreline and caught a different view of the area with two icebergs grounded off Spaniard's Bay in the distance. The eigth image was taken from a boat and it seemed as if the town was rising out of the fog. The town on top of the hill in that image is Upper Island Cove. If you're interested, I've uploaded other photos of the community, scenery and icebergs to my Blog this morning.

Burnt Point

Burnt Point is a small community located in Conception Bay North along the Baccalieu Trail. It is a scenic community with gently sloping hills leading to steep ocean cliffs. Today's photos were taken during two separate trips around the Baccalieu Trail.

Brighton

Brighton

Brighton, a small community of around 225, is located in Green Bay on the island of Newfoundland. Today's photos were taken in July, 2003 on a fairly dull day. While photographing the town, it got a little brighter but it was still very overcast. I've only been there twice in my life.

My website has been offline for around 30 hours (I am changing servers again) and should be on line again sometime today. Of course that also means my mail has not been getting through and may have bounced back to anyone who has tried to contact me. My email should be back online again sometime today as well.

Cape Broyle

Cape Broyle

Cape Broyle is located on the Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula along the Irish Loop. As a young university student I worked with a mining company and stayed in Mike's Hotel (which burned a few years ago) in this community for most of one summer. We explored the interior of the Avalon from this location and though we didn't discover a mine, it was an experience I'll always remember.

I haven't been including people in my photographs of communities but decided to include a few today. Those photos were taken after the opening of the "food fishery" in 2002. I was happy to see that they had caught some decent-sized fish and was caught up in the excitement of the fishermen who were allowed to catch a few cod for personal consumption.

You may have noticed a lot of trees on the hills around this town, especially when compared with several communities I've shared over the past month. This town, like several others in this part of the province, is located at the end of a fairly long harbour and isn't exposed directly to the pounding of the wind and waves of the open ocean. As you drive a little farther south on the Irish Loop you see areas where there are few trees that can be seen for miles. If you've never taken a ride around the Irish Loop, I would highly recommend it.

Broad Cove

Broad Cove, Conception Bay is one of my favourite communities to photograph along the Baccalieu Trail. Every time I am in that area I take the time to drive through it making photos of the old style houses. Today I am showing a few wider shots of the community that should give you an idea of what it is like there. I've also shared a few winter shots of the area.

Cupids

Cupids

Cupids is the oldest English continuous settlement in Canada and possibly all of North America. Originally settled by John Guy in 1610, last year it celebrated its 400th anniversary and had visitors from around the world. According to Wikipedia, this community has also been known as Cuper's Cove, Coper's Cove, Cuperts and Coopers.

Cupid's is about 40 minute drive from my home so I have been there several times over the years. In fact there is one house there that was in a terrible state of disrepair for many years. During my last visit I noticed that the house has bee repaired. Of course that is the topic of a future Photo of the Day.

Carbonear

Carbonear

Carbonear is located in Conception Bay along the Baccalieu Trail. With a population of approximately 5000, it is a much larger community than I have been showing for the past 30 days. As well, since it is an service centre for many communities in the area, it boasts shopping malls, box stores, coffee shops, restaurants, banks, grocery stores, museums, historical buildings, several churches and a hospital.

Grates Cove is located along the Baccalieu Trail on the tip of the Bay de Verde Peninsula. Today's photos show the town and it's relationship to the land and sea. The boats moored just off the craggy cliffs, houses dotted along a treeless landscape, crumbling fishing stages of an industry in trouble and the community wharf all provided subjects for making photos there.

Chapel Arm

Chapel Arm

Chapel Arm is another community along the Osprey Trail on the Isthmus of the Avalon. With a population of around 450, this small community in Trinity Bay is worth a few minutes drive off the Trans Canada Highway to have a look around and make a few photos. I have more images of this area but will share them during my next Boats series.

Card's Harbour

Card's Harbour

Card's Harbour is located in scenic Green Bay in the central area of island of Newfoundland. I last photographed this community in the summer of 2003. In the early morning the town was shrouded in thick fog but as the day progressed, it cleared up completely. The majority of today's photos were taken before the weather cooperated fully.

You will notice that while the weather was foggy I tended to shoot fishing stages, boats and lobster pots. As it got sunnier I included wide shots so viewers would see more of the community.

Chance Cove

Chance Cove

Chance Cove is located in Trinity Bay on the Isthmus of the Avalon. It is a small, but scenic, town with population of just over 300. I've been there a few times but only twice in recent years. This community is at the end of the Osprey Trail and if you haven't taken the time to get off the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) and exploring the area, I would recommend taking a drive along the trail. It shouldn't take very long unless you're making lots of photos!

Today's photos were taken during my two visits in 2003. The first five were taken with my Canon EOS 10.1 Megapixel camera and the next four with my old Olympus C2100 2.1 Megapixel camera.

Gaskiers

Gaskiers

Gaskiers is a small community (population - around 300) along the Irish Loop and is located in St. Mary's Bay. I've driven through this community often and have photographed most, if not all, the houses in the town. Like many communities jutting into the North Atlantic, there aren't many trees near the water but you can see a forest behind the houses in some of the photos.

In September and October of 2011, I shared photos of the foggy Burin Peninsula. When I visited in August 2002, it was much nicer and I managed to make a few nice images that I am sharing nearly ten years after they were taken.

Conception Harbour is another scenic community located in Conception Bay Centre. Since it isn't too far from my home in Holyrood, it is another place I visit to photograph fairly often.

The first image will give you an idea of the scenery around the town. The red buildings in the photographs are photogenic and I have many images of them including a few more I uploaded to my Blog his morning.

Sunnyside

These are the first winter scenes thus far in the current Communities of Newfoundland and Labrador series. We've had a bit of snow (around 6-8") in the past couple of days and it's looking like winter outside. On January 31, 2004 I drove through the town of Sunnyside, located in Trinity Bay. and photographed a few nice winter scenes that may look much like the town looks like after our recent snowfall. Even though the weather can be harsh here this time of the year, you can still find peaceful scenes that help illustrate our peoples' relationship to the land and the sea.

The Beothuck, the native people on the island of Newfoundland, had a settlement in this area and the first recorded meeting between the English and the Beothuck took place in Sunnyside, then called Truce Cove. I can't imagine the living conditions there 500 years ago. In winter they may have moved into the more central and wooded part of the island where there would be caribou and other game animals that provided food and clothing. It would have been, and still would be, an extremely tough life here without modern day conveniences such as electricity.

Harbour Main

Harbour Main is a scenic community located in Conception Bay Centre. I have visited this community often in the past 30 years and have many photos. The first photo shows a little inlet across from the church and priest's house. The second is a view up the harbour and the third shows a well-visited swimming pool that is maintained by the town.

Heart's Content

Heart's Content

Heart's Content, located in Trinity Bay, has a rich history dating back to John Guy's visit in 1615. It has become known around the world because it was chosen as the landing point for the first Trans-Atlantic cable in 1866. The first photo shows the Cable Museum, a provincial Historic Site. I've uploaded more images related to this historical occasion to my Blog today. You will still find a few fishing stages as well as other historical buildings in the community today.

Southport

Southport

Southport is located in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. I have only visited this community once even though I have driven by the access road from the Trans Canada Highway numerous times. Once day in June, 2005 I decided to photograph the towns along the road to Southport and I was glad I did. I photographed most, if not all the communities and captured a few interesting images. However, I am not sure where all the photos were taken. I must have missed the town signs which I use as a reference. Hopefully, today's photos were all taken in Southport.

As you can see, there were many fishing stages in this community and most of them were in great condition. I took many more images of them which I will share at a later date. The purpose of the Communities of Newfoundland and Labrador Series is to give you an impression of where the residents of our province live. I will concentrate on fishing stages and outbuildings later this year.

Flatrock

Flatrock

Flatrock is a scenic community located near the northeastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula. I started visiting this community when I was a young geology student at Memorial University in the late 1960s when I created a slide show about sedimentary rocks. You can see the layers in the rocks sloping into the ocean in today's photos which made it the perfect place to make photos.

Because of its proximity to St. John's, Flatrock is a growing community with a population of around 1200. If you are visiting the Avalon Peninsula, add this community to your list of places to visit. The rocky shores, steep cliffs, fishing boats and, in the right conditions, huge waves will guarantee that you won't be disappointed. The town also has a very interesting and photogenic Grotto where Pope John Paul II visited in 1984. I have many more images of the town and have added them to my list for a future Photo of the Day.

Salmon Cove

Salmon Cove

Salmon Cove, located in Conception Bay, is well-known for it's beautiful sandy beach and steep cliffs. Today I chose a few images of the area which will give you an idea of the beach in relation to the nearby houses. I have been asked why our beaches are so rocky, but there are many sandy beaches around the island. Like anywhere in the world, the more that rocks are eroded, the more smaller particles (sand) there will be. Salmon Cove is exposed to the constant wave action of the North Atlantic which has created the steep cliffs, crags and 1/2 km sandy beach.

I would definitely recommend a trip to Salmon Cove Sands if you plan to be in the area. However, don't plan on swimming leisurely in the ocean because the water is cold even in the middle of the summer. When I was much younger I swam in the ocean, but in recent years it is like jumping into ice water so I avoid it. :)

Battle Harbour

Battle Harbour

Battle Harbour is located on an island off the southeast coast of Southern Labrador. Years ago, fishermen from the island of Newfoundland went to Battle Harbour and stayed throughout the fishing season then returned home for the winter. The town was abandoned after the downturn in the fishing industry. In recent years the buildings in the town have been rebuilt and the town is open for tourists during the summer months.

Today's photos were taken in July, 2004 as we approached the town after an hour's boat ride from Mary's Harbour. As you can see from the photos, the sun was low in the sky as we arrived. After the sun set, we were treated to a wonderful display of the Northern Lights (aurora Borealis) and we stayed up late into the night making photos of the wonderful display.

I spent 24 hours on the island and took over 2000 photos from which I created a CD with eight slide shows that will give you a good idea of what the town is like during the summer. Colliers

Colliers is located in Conception Bay Centre about 20 minutes drive from my home in Holyrood. It is a scenic community which I have also visited often. While choosing photos for this series, I've noticed that in some communities I have more photos of houses, boats, outbuildings and animals whereas in others I have more images of the scenery such as steep cliffs or seascapes. Today's images show the town and its place in the surroundings. I do have lots of other photos of the houses and scenery in this community as well.

The first two photos were taken from one of the rolling hills that surround the large harbour. The other photos should give you an idea of the size of the harbour and the hills around the town.

Heart's Delight/Islington

Heart's Delight/Islington

The town of Heart's Delight/Islington, located on the south side of Trinity Bay, was incorporated as a single community in 1973. It is a scenic community that I have visited many times.

The first photo was taken in 1982 and shows part of a wharf and small fishing boats. In recent years there haven't been as many boats tied up to the wharf. I am not sure if this wharf is still there; it may have been replaced by a newer one since the photo was taken. Maybe someone from the town can verify this for me.

The next two photos were taken looking towards the town across a small lake between the ocean and this part of the town.

Lumsden

Today's photos illustrate how dark and overcast it was as I tried to photograph the communities along the Kittiwake Coast. It started to get a little brighter along the way but in Lumsden it was so dark I only took a few photos near a beach area. The first photo shows a small "cabin" - at least I think it is a cabin because it was located among several others near the sandy beach in the third photo. It is very small but has a deck built around it. The rocky area just offshore as well as the long sandy beach were interesting and I made a couple of photos before driving to the next community. Normally I wouldn't have shared these images because they are dark, but since I had a request and I had only visited this area once in my life, these were the only photos I have.

A while back someone asked if we ever saw the sun here in Newfoundland. Of course we do, but we see lots of rain, drizzle and fog as well. As I told a couple of tourists from British Columbia as they were heading to Newfoundland, "You don't come here for the weather!" When travelling, I realize that the weather is beyond my control and I have to live with it. One of these days, I'll do the same trip on a nice day. :)

Newtown

Newtown

The town of Newtown has existed since 1850 and has a population of around 400 people. In 1992 it amalgamated with the towns of Wesleyville and Badger's Quay-Valleyfield-Pool's Island and is now part of the community of New-Wes-Valley located in Bonavista Bay.

I visited this area of the province in the summer of 2006 on a very overcast day and didn't take as many photos as I normally would have. I shared photos of the Barbour Premises on April 6, 2009 and July 18, 2006 if you would like to check my Blog to see those images.

From the comments I have received, it appears that many of you are enjoying my Communities of Newfoundland Series. Originally I planned to run this series until the end of January, however, I may continue it until the end of February. I have already chosen photos from over 20 communities and have many, many more to choose from.

You may have noticed that I am sharing photos from all over the province. When I receive a request, I try to show photos of that community as soon as I can (if I have any). Feel free to request photos from any towns, however I don't have any from the Stephenville/Port au Port Peninsula or the south coast west of the Coast of Bays, or much of Labrador. Actually, in 1996, I was lucky to have been the official photographer during George Bush Sr.'s visit to Labrador and flew to several rivers and coastal communities of that area by helicopter. I definitely have to speed up the scanning process because I captured some great aerial views of Labrador during that trip.

Brigus

Brigus

Brigus is a scenic little town located in Conception Bay. It is around 30 minutes drive from my home so I get to visit fairly often. The people in this town have worked hard to make this town an attractive tourist destination. For years they offered Steps Through Time, a historical walk through the narrow streets and scenic areas of the town. Nice restaurants, gift shops, a museum and the Annual Blueberry Festival attract visitors throughout the summer.

Today's photos were taken after climbing one of the hills in the town. They should give you an idea of what the town is like.

I've only been to the south coast of Labrador on one occasion and photographed several towns including St. Lewis where today's photos were taken. It was a dull overcast day in the "Big Land" so I didn't get as many photos as I would have liked.

The first photo shows three inuksuk welcoming visitors to the town. I hadn't seen an animal inuksuk before so these three caught my attention. I altered this image using the tools in Picasa 3. I've uploaded the original to my Blog so you can see the difference.

The boats and fishing stages are common photographic subjects found in Labrador as well as on the island Newfoundland.

Bay Bulls

Bay Bulls

Bay Bulls is located on the Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula. This is an interesting town because they have really diversified the economy since the downturn of the northern cod fishery in the 1980s and 1990s. Though there may still be a few fishermen operating, there are a few whale and puffin tour operators as well as other tourism-related businesses such as bed and breakfast, gift shops and restaurants. (Captain Murphy's, seen in the third photo, operates out of Witless Bay, the next community along the Irish Loop). The net in the second photo is a cod farm, one of the first aquaculture experiments in the province. There are also farms, cattle, horseback riding, boat manufacturing, as well as a service centre for the offshore oil industry.

Bay Bulls is a busy town, especially during the summer months. I've been visiting this town since 1982 and have many photos of this scenic area since that time.

Chapel's Cove

Chapel's Cove

Chapel's Cove is located in Conception Bay and is just 10 minutes drive from my house. As you can imagine, I've been there many times since moving to this area of the province in 1982.

The yellow house in the first photo was burned to the ground a few years ago during a small grass fire that travelled to the woods in the area. A few houses were burned during that fire. There is a nice beach in the community where capelin come ashore to spawn every summer. I liked the red outbuildings in the last photo this morning and have many images of them taken over the years.

Green's Harbour

Green's Harbour is located along the Baccalieu Trail on the Southern Shore of Trinity Bay . I've driven through the main road of the town many times, but only took time to make a few photos on one occasion. Today's photos were taken in late summer 2003 during a photo trip when I photographed most of the towns in that area.

When I am making photos of towns in Newfoundland and Labrador, I usually drive on the main road through the town as well as any side roads I see. Normally I don't have specific images in mind but look for photos everywhere in the town. If I see something that attracts my attention, I usually stop to make a few photos. Of course you will see common themes such as boats, houses, fishing stages, fences, gardens, seascapes and people in the photos I am sharing in the current Communities of Newfoundland and Labrador Series.

Trinity East

Trinity East

Yesterday I had a request from a person whose grandmother came from Trinity East and today's photos show a little of that scenic community.

The first three photos were taken from the Town of Trinity looking across Trinity Bight. There were a few stages in the town when I last visited in August, 2006 and since a couple of them weren't in the greatest shape, I made photos of several of them.

This area of the province is doing fairly well because of the tourists that visit the Trinity area each summer. The Town of Trinity has become a tourist destination because of the Trinity Pageant which was started nearly 20 years ago. Visitors who attend the pageant are taken through the narrow streets of the community where actors and actresses retell a little of its history. Of course, after the pageant tourists tend to explore the community and surrounding area including the town of Trinity East.

Little Harbour East

Little Harbour East

There are at least two towns called Little Harbour East in Newfoundland and Labrador. The photos today were taken in the town that is located on the Isthmus of the Avalon Peninsula in Placentia Bay. I haven't been to the town of the same name on the Burin Peninsula.

It was a very overcast day in late July, 2009 the last time I visited this town with the intention of making photographs, There were still quite a few fishing stages and lots of fishing boats to photograph and most of them were in decent condition. I've only photographed this community a couple of times in the 30 years I've lived on the Avalon. It is an hour's drive from my house and I always passed by the access road that takes you to the town. To be honest, there was no sign indicating the distance from the Trans Canada Highway to the town and I was always too rushed to explore. Once, while driving by, I decided to visit and was sorry I hadn't done it before because of the photo ops there.

Springdale

Springdale

The Town of Springdale is located in Green Bay in Central Newfoundland. The first photo was taken in 1971 and the second in July, 2003. You can certainly see how much the little point of land changed over the 32 years between the two photos: many more buildings, taller trees, more stages, but fewer boats.

In 1971, I was shooting with my first 35 mm camera, a Miranda Sensorex. I was new to photography, used a semi-manual camera (the camera would suggest a shutter speed and I would have to turn a ring on the lens to match a needle with the suggestion). I was just learning about photography and experimenting with the camera. At that time I had only the "normal" lens (50mm) that came with the camera.

1971 was also my first year teaching and my wife and I accepted positions in King's Point, about 10-15 minute drive from Springdale. Interestingly, several of my students from King's Point/Rattling Brook are on my Photo of the Day list and we still communicate after all those years. A couple of those students have already retired. I AM getting old!! ;)

Photos of Springdale and surrounding communities were requested by a person on my list that once lived in Springdale. As stated yesterday, I have 32 years of slides to scan and will share older photos of communities as they are scanned.

Bellevue

Bellevue

The Town of Bellevue is located in Trinity Bay on the isthmus of the Avalon Peninsula. It was founded as Tickle Harbour in 1864 but the name was changed to Bellevue in 1896. This small community has a population of around 200.

Today's photos were taken in late June, 2003 with my (then) brand new Canon 10D, the first Digital SLR that I purchased. It is amazing how prices have dropped in the last 10 years. In 2003 I paid $2500 for the camera body, which was compatible with all my Canon lenses and filters. I saw a Canon 60D on sale recently for around $1000 and that camera is a lot more hi-tech than the 10D. In 2003, a 1 GB CF card cost $400 (I bought 2 at the time) and that was quite expensive. I purchased a 32 GB memory card last week for $29.99 + tax - quite a difference!!

I haven't been back to Bellevue since 2003 so I will have to add it to my places to visit next summer and get some recent photos. There were a few old stages falling into the ocean in 2003 and I suspect they are gone now. There were still a few people fishing out of that community in 2003 and their stages were in good condition. It will be interesting to photograph them almost a decade later. As well, Bellevue was a great place to photograph ospreys diving for fish. In fact, the town is located on the Osprey Trail, obviously named for the beautiful birds that inhabit the area.

I've had requests for photos of several towns including Buchans and Argentia but I do not have slides of those communities scanned yet. As I scan photos of those, and other, communities I will share them with you.

Deer Lake

I've had a request for photos of Deer Lake on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland. I visited Deer Lake nearly every year since 1980 when our friends moved there from Grand Falls. I am sure I have lots of slides of that area of the province, but they haven't been scanned. However, I do have a few photos I am sharing today.

The first shows the Humber River and the old Nicholsville Bridge which was closed a few years ago. There are others that show a view of the long, sandy beach. One day I saw a few kids climb the bridge and I waited for them to jump. One image shows three of them just as their feet were about to enter the water. The photo of the Power Plant was taken from my friend's boat.

Happy New Year.

Today is the beginning of the 10th year of my Photo of the Day and my list has grown from a few family and friends to over 750 people from all over the world. It probably would be over 1000 by now but I accidentally erased nearly 300 names once and never got them back. If you know someone who would like to receive my daily photos, feel free to send me their names.

My Photo of the Day has changed over the years. At first I shared only one photo each day, but after a while I started adding the second, then the third photo. I started my Blog in 2006 and have uploaded more than 8000 photos since then. I have settled into sending three photos by email and uploading at least five to my Blog. I get an average of 30 people per day visiting my Blog and I suspect most of them are from my email list and are interested in seeing the extra images. If you visit my Blog regularly, feel free to share the address with your friends and family. The advantage of the Blog is that visitors can actually search for specific photographic subjects.

Today I am starting a Community of Newfoundland and Labrador Series and am welcoming requests. I had a request for images of Grand Falls-Windsor and am sharing photos of my home town today. Grand Falls was a good place to grow up in. It was a fairly large town when I was a kid (around 6 000 people), we had electricity, water and sewer and paved roads all of which weren't common around this province in the 1950s. I can never remember being bored and having "nothing to do". We spent lots of time playing baseball and hockey on the roads, playing in the woods, swimming in the town's outdoor pool, exploring our surroundings and everything else that kids did in those days. We didn't get TV until I was ten years old so we played outside most of the time.

Today's photos were taken during a walk around the downtown area in 2006 and shows a few of the streets. The first two were taken in front of the house I grew up in on Crescent Heights. I remember when they planted the beautiful maples on our street but never realized how beautiful they would be later on. The third is a photo of the Royal Canadian Legion sitting atop a hill overlooking the downtown. We used to have fun sliding on this hill though it seemed bigger when I was much younger. The next few show High Street which certainly has changed a lot over the years. Next is Church Road which is essentially the same except three of the churches have been torn down and rebuilt on the same location. The last photo shows Monchy Road with houses built in the 40s or early 50s.

Happy New Year!

Wow. The photos of strawberries certainly caught your attention yesterday. Like the people who commented, I would love to have a few fresh strawberries right now. Oh well, it'll be at least 7 months before mine will be ripe. :)

I thought that you might like a little colour on this last day of 2011 so I found a few flower photos taken in mid-July. Up until the snow we had on Christmas Eve, a few pansies were still blooming.

I can't remember the name of the red flower. I first planted it in a poor location and it did not do well. Last fall I moved it to a new flower garden and this summer it grew fairly well producing small red flowers that grew at the end of very long thin stems. Because it is in a fairly windy location, the stems and flowers were beaten by the wind. I am planning to move it to a more sheltered location in the spring.

I think the bluish flowers are a variety of salvia. This was the second summer for this plant, which I transplanted last fall. It seemed to do well in the new location and flowered all summer. Next are two photos of thyme flowers followed by an hydrangea just starting to flower on July 20.

Strawberries

It's been raining and very windy here for the past 24 hours or so and it's taken away all the snow we had just in time for Christmas. To be honest - I would rather have snow this time of the year than rain!! I plan to start a new Communities of Newfoundland and Labrador series on New Year's Day. If you have a request for specific communities, feel free to let me know and I will try to accommodate your request.

Today I chose to share photos of strawberries that I grew during summers gone by. When we lived in our house next door I had a small strawberry garden (about 8 x 8 feet) which provided delicious strawberries early each summer. The first two photos were taken after picking a few in 2001. I presently have three strawberry gardens in my new yard: two are about 12' x 12' and the other is about 3' x 10'. The first summer I moved here I planted one small bed (5' x 10') and found that each morning something had been eating the ripe berries. I've seen robins, crows, snails and a few unidentified insects eating ripened berries and that year I hardly got any for myself.

People suggested nets to keep birds out and poison for insects. However, I found a solution that didn't require nets or poisons and I am happy with it. A couple of times a day, I pick berries that are almost, but not quite, ripe and place them on a windowsill for a day or so, letting them ripen inside where they are safe. I still lose a few berries to the critters, but manage to save most of them. Last year we harvested enough to have lots of fresh strawberries, make jams and freeze some for desserts throughout the winter. I plan to double the size of the 3' x 10' in the early spring using the new plants that grew last summer and fall.

Winter Walk 4

These are the last photos in this Winter Walk series for now. I suspect that there will be a few more before the Spring. It is raining this morning which makes a mess of the six inch blanket of snow that we've had since Christmas Eve.

Yesterday someone asked why I was promoting the Nikon Coolpix P500. Actually I am not promoting it, but providing examples of the first Winter photos so you could see the results of the test I completed during a winter walk. Several people on my list have this camera and a few have been asking me questions about it. Based on the results, the Nikon will be the main camera for hiking in the woods.

This morning's photos were taken as I walked along the trails from my house to Main Beach Pond. Even though I have walked these trails for thirty years I never tire of the peace and quiet they have to offer. I've photographed them in all seasons except Fall - too dangerous to walk during the hunting season!

The 36x optical zoom on the Nikon Coolpix P500 lets you get close views of subjects. I zoomed in on the golden reflections in the small areas of open water to test how the camera would the bright reflections near the snow and ice. I also zoomed closer to trees and rocks sticking out of the ice in shady areas of the lake. I was pleased with the results of these tests as well.

Main Beach Pond is about 15 - 20 minutes walk from my house. I use the same trails winter and summer so I know them well however, like all hikers, I have to be extra careful this time of the year.

It was a great day to make photos. If you look carefully at today's images you will see shady areas and bright snow in direct sunlight. I focused on the brightest areas then let the camera do the work. I think it performed fairly well. The blue sky, details in the shadows, and nice lighting in the reflections were excellent.
